August 29 Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order at 7 am by President Craig Reese

Announcements

Craig Reese - District Governor Marjolein Lloyd Visit Oct 17th
  • IMPORTANT FACT:
    • Arch C. Klump (the stuffed garden gnome in the governor's videos) is named after the founder of the Rotary Foundation in 1935
    • This is a fact that everyone should know for the visit on Oct 17th

Breakfast for Tuesday Meetings

  • Kelly Walker will pick up orders on the way to the meeting on Tuesdays.
  • Email Kelly 3Lmonkes@gmail.com to pre-order breakfast ($8.00).
    • NOTE: The orders will need to be in by the Monday (the day before the Tuesday morning meeting).
Our Outbound Exchange Student - Pearl

"I am having so much fun. Getting on the plane was hard but since then I’ve been really busy! I was going to wait to send pictures until after my inbound orientation which starts today but I’ll send some pictures now too!"








Our Inbound Exchange Student - Laerke from Denmark
  • She plans to study Sports Medicine to become a doctor.
  • There are host families for her for the 1st and 3rd part of her stay.
    • We need a family for the 2nd part of her stay from November to February or March.
  • Here are some photos from her first exposure to the valley.
She visited the museum in Cashmere.


Laerke was very impressed with Wenatchee High School and very excited for the school year. She has joined the swim team even though she doesn't swim well. She is doing it for the experience.



This photo from Saddle Rock is higher than any mountain in Denmark.


Brags and Confessions

Craig Reese
  • His wife retired from teaching last year
  • She woke up smiling on the first day of school this year
Wayne Massing
  • Wayne has been traveling for quite some time
  • He spent June in
    • Montana
      • He visited his grandfather's ranch and grave site
      • He also visited Swimming Woman Canyon where his parents ashes were scattered
      • The Airbnb he stayed in was his childhood home
    • Wyoming
    • South Dakota (Mt. Rushmore and Devil's Tower)
    • He stopped in Great Falls on the way home
    • He then had cataract surgery upon his return

Anthony was joined by two of his teachers and David Barshes.

  • Graham Stansbery
    • Everyone is aware that the pandemic was hard on all students.
    • In Anthony's case he saw a lot of potential.
    • Anthony was inconsistent, and struggled at times but he has a light that positively affects those around him.
  • Wade Holmes
    • Wade met Anthony during his first year at Westside.
    • They didn't see eye to eye at first, but he saw motivation just waiting to be tapped.
  • Anthony
    • School was hard.
    • He got all F's in 7th grade.
    • Covid made school even harder.
    • In person school helped him get back on track.
    • He made the move from Eastmont to Westside during Covid.
    • Challenge Scholar program has been a real motivator.
    • It made him realize that he could do more with his life.
  • Wade Holmes
    • He was Anthony's advisor at Westside.
    • More time they spent together, Wade saw that Anthony had real character as a person.
  • Graham Stansbery
    • At first, Anthony could be found in the wrong classroom.
    • He seemed to be hiding.
    • Graham learned that Anthony was a great person.
    • He believed that Anthony had more in him.
    • He also saw real resilience.
    • At first success is uncomfortable after struggling.
    • The feeling is different than what the students are used to.
  • David Barshes
    • He was Anthony's advisor in the Challenge Scholar program.
    • Their relationship was unsure in the beginning.
    • They became closer over time.
  • Anthony
    • He went through a lot of changes over the 2 years.
    • The program works. School is better and his confidence has grown.
    • He still has his moments, but he is more motivated and recovers more quickly.
    • His next steps:
      • He is interested in Psychology and Philosophy.
      • He is considering a job as a teacher.
  • Wade Holmes
    • This is first year in the Challenge Scholarship program.
    • He sees it as a great program.
  • Graham Stansbery
    • He has been a part of the program, and he has seen the development over the years, and the success it has given to the students.
  • Congratulations to Athony for doing the hard work needed to succeed both now and in the future.

  • For Your Information:
    • There are 10 new students starting in the new school year.
    • More volunteer mentors are needed
    • Duties
      • 1 - 2 year commitment
      • Meet with student twice per semester
