September 12 Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order at 7 am by President Craig Reese. "Good morning, Sunbeams!"

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Glenn King.

The Invocation was delivered by Jim Adamson. 

District Governor Visit

On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, our Rotary District 5060 District Governor Marjolein Lloyd will visit and address the club during our meeting. The Wenatchee Sunrise Board of Directors and Executives will meet with her the previous night. Please plan to attend the October 17th meeting to give her a warm welcome.

Birthday Celebration

Craig announced that Milt Herman and Emma Crowe were both celebrating their birthdays in September. The club sang Happy Birthday to them. Seems cruel since they were already getting older, and then they had to hear our voices too! :) 

Youth Exchange Program Update - Julie Banken

Inbound Orientation

The program volunteers and the students met for an Inbound Orientation. There were 17 students from throughout the district in attendance.

The classes included:

• Dealing with home sickness
• Culture shock
• Conflict Management
• Ways to adjust
• How to have a successful year
• Rules and regulations.

They met the other students from around the world. The Rotarians in attendance also got to meet and get to know each other, share ideas, learn how to follow Rotary Youth Exchange, and State Department rules.

Circled numbers on the following map show the number of YE students related to that club.

Flag Ceremony - Each student walks with other students from the same country. They bring their flags.

Introductions - The students introduce themselves. Here is Laerka during her introduction.

Group Session - The students and Rotary volunteers get to know each other.

The next event is a weekend trip to Siivesta at Vernon, BC in December.

Application process to identify the next group of students.

• Applications will be reviewed on September 24th and 25th.
• City Interviews will be held on October 21st.

• Jim Huffman is moving to honorary membership/status for health reasons.

Jay Higgins - Reintroduction to Sunrise Rotary

Jay is a Nor'wester at heart having been born in Seattle, but he only made it two weeks then moved four times before his first foray into the Apple Capital where he made it all the way through 1st grade at Washington Elementary School. 

Thereafter, he grew up in South Carolina near Fort Sumter where the first shots of the War of Northern Aggression were fired, through middle school, then started high school in the Avocado Capital of the World, Fallbrook in San Diego County, before returning to God's Country graduating from Olympic High School in Silverdale. 

He made his way back to the sunny side of the state by matriculating to Cougar Country, completing a Master's degree in Counseling and finally returning to the Great Northwest Power Belt Buckle in 1993 to serve as a counselor at WHS and later at John Newbery Elementary. He was a school counselor for 22 years where he became aware of and joined Sunrise Rotary mostly through Jim Adamson. 

Jay recently returned a third time to Wenatchee after a fascinating sojourn in the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth where he managed a busy restaurant for a bit and then taught 5th-12th grades at Upper Valley Christian School where he got to use his degrees in French and Biology.  He was a Rotarian there, active in youth services until his teaching assignment interfered with meetings. 

In 2022, he completed training to serve as a Designated Crisis Responder / Mental Health Professional for Chelan-Douglas counties through Catholic Charities, which he had contemplated for twenty-five years and is glad to finally be bringing hope to life for those most in need. 

Interesting side note: Jay served for 8 years as a US Navy Reserve Intelligence Specialist. Jay has been privileged to be a lifelong Scout and then Scouter, earning the rank of Eagle at Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton in California.

Jay has three children, two Eagle Scout sons and an Apple Blossom Princess daughter who was in the senior coed Venturing division. She is married and has two daughters of her own (4 and 6) whom she and her husband are holding hostage against Jay's will in Pullman, almost at the ends of the earth. Her brothers remain in this happy valley so far. 

Jay has had the joy of attending 9 National or International Scout Jamborees in numerous countries and most recently as a Chaplain this summer in West Virginia where he renewed his interest in Rotary by encountering members of the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians, but really, it restarted during Apple Blossom where the Adamson's sold him losing Road Apple Roulette tickets. The thing is, though, with Rotary, even if you lose, you win, because it went to a truly great cause and led him back here to the best Rotary club! 

Program - Mark Van Horne - 3D Printing

Mark is uniquely qualified to present a leading-edge technology like 3D printing. His engineering background includes Boeing and MIT.

He presented an overview of the technology involved. He also brought a number of examples of his printed projects.  

Not only is Mark an incredibly talented and brilliant engineer, but he is also someone who demonstrates a clear passion for lifelong learning, and for sharing his gift with others.

District Governor Visit

Fund Raising Survey

Mark VanHorne, WSRC Board of Director, explained the Rubric or survey used to poll other Rotary Clubs about their fundraisers. The Fundraising Committee met directly after the meeting to discuss the poll results and further efforts needed to find another major fundraiser for our club. Mark shared a map of the Rotary clubs that the Fundraising Committee has polled about their fundraising events and results.

Rotary Park Flags

President Craig said that the 3 Rotary clubs in Wenatchee take turns quarterly lowering the US flag per the schedule from the Washington Governor's office in Olympia. An alternate flag raiser is needed, and Bill Ostheimer volunteered to do that. Kevin Love, our club's current flag raiser will train him!

Guests in Attendance

John Sagerser, parent of our last year's Outbound Youth Exchange student to Denmark, was at the meeting. He and his family are hosting this year's Inbound YE student from Denmark, Laerke Andersen. Her host Rotary Club is Dragholm, Denmark.

Laerke gave a brief talk about her trip to Wenatchee and starting school. One of her favorite classes is swimming! She did a banner exchange with President Craig. 

She will be here during the whole school year. Plan to invite her to events you are attending, or to your home. She can be reached at 509-741-8003 (cell/text) or terkelhoj@icloud.com. Welcome Laerke! (Pronounced with a "soft 'g'" in place of the "k".) Laerke left the meeting early to attend WHS classes!

Julie Banken, our District Youth Exchange Officer, added to Laerke's introduction. She lives in a small town in Denmark but attends a large High School there. Her favorite class is Sports Medicine. When Laerke was asked about our "Danish Pastries", she said they weren't! She is excited about meeting other YE students at the Inbound Youth Exchange Student get-together in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, this coming weekend. It will combine two adjacent Rotary Districts; the first time for this event!

President Craig and Laerke did a club banner exchange! District 5060 Youth Exchange Officer looked on.

Brags and Confessions

Mansour gave a heads up that he will be in Portland for the next few weeks to attend doctor's appointments.

Jennifer bragged about her trailer at The Gorge.

Earl bragged up the PAC-12 teams. All undefeated this last week. Carol tagged on that the Cougars won as well.

Wayne M. bragged that he got a haircut and "was back"!

Becky Cummins Classification Talk

One of our newest members gave her classification talk. Becky Cummins was born in California, in a small town on the beach! Last year, she and her husband moved to Wenatchee, when she was offered a job as Funeral Director at the Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home. Her husband also found a job at Standard Paint as Flooring Manager. 

She was a Funeral Director in California for 23 years and has also worked in the Aerospace industry. Her husband was in the Navy in Virginia. They have 3 sons, 3 daughters-in-law, and 3 grandchildren!

Becky says she loves the funeral industry and her part in it, which is compassion. Her priorities in life are her family, her faith and her community. Hobbies are her grandchildren and making gift baskets. Recently she raised over $6500 selling her gift baskets for a fundraiser! She also like taking walks. Becky provided the club with copies of a booklet called "5 Wishes-Family Directions for After Death". Becky is a cancer-survivor! 

President Craig said a book will be donated in her name to Pinnacles Prep School for being our speaker. Welcome Becky!

Shot-Gun Classification Talk

Jim Adamson, former District 5060 District Governor, former Club President, and all-around good guy gave snappy answers to questions asked by Wayne Massing during this 3-minute classification talk!

Glenn King announced that he and his family are at the Washington State Swap Meet at Eastmont Park (Near Bob's Burgers and Brews) selling art to raise money for the Alzheimer's Foundation. Special pricing on his beautiful photos. Fri until 6 pm, Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm and Sunday, 8 am to 3 pm. Stop, say HI and buy something.

Our Outbound Exchange Student - Pearl

"I am having so much fun. Getting on the plane was hard but since then I’ve been really busy! I was going to wait to send pictures until after my inbound orientation which starts today but I’ll send some pictures now too!"

Our Inbound Exchange Student - Laerke from Denmark

• She plans to study Sports Medicine to become a doctor.
• There are host families for her for the 1st and 3rd part of her stay.
• We need a family for the 2nd part of her stay from November to February or March.

She visited the museum in Cashmere.

Laerke was very impressed with Wenatchee High School and very excited for the school year. She has joined the swim team even though she doesn't swim well. She is doing it for the experience.

• Everyone is aware that the pandemic was hard on all students.
• In Anthony's case he saw a lot of potential.
• Anthony was inconsistent, and struggled at times but he has a light that positively affects those around him.

• Wade met Anthony during his first year at Westside.
• They didn't see eye to eye at first, but he saw motivation just waiting to be tapped.

• School was hard.
• He got all F's in 7th grade.
• Covid made school even harder.
• In person school helped him get back on track.
• He made the move from Eastmont to Westside during Covid.
• Challenge Scholar program has been a real motivator.
• It made him realize that he could do more with his life.
• Wade Holmes
• He was Anthony's advisor at Westside.
• More time they spent together, Wade saw that Anthony had real character as a person.
• Graham Stansbery
• At first, Anthony could be found in the wrong classroom.
• He seemed to be hiding.
• Graham learned that Anthony was a great person.
• He believed that Anthony had more in him.
• He also saw real resilience.
• At first success is uncomfortable after struggling.
• The feeling is different than what the students are used to.
• David Barshes
• He was Anthony's advisor in the Challenge Scholar program.
• Their relationship was unsure in the beginning.
• They became closer over time.
• Anthony
• He went through a lot of changes over the 2 years.
• The program works. School is better and his confidence has grown.
• He still has his moments, but he is more motivated and recovers more quickly.
• His next steps:
• He is interested in Psychology and Philosophy.
• He is considering a job as a teacher.

• This is first year in the Challenge Scholarship program.
• He sees it as a great program.
• Graham Stansbery
• He has been a part of the program, and he has seen the development over the years, and the success it has given to the students.
• Congratulations to Athony for doing the hard work needed to succeed both now and in the future.
