Program - Rachel Evey and Dr. Faimous Harrison - WVCC

Left to Right: Rachel Evey, Robin DeRock and Dr. Faimous Harrison

Dr. Faimous JL (Johnny Lee) Harrison took office as the thirteenth president of Wenatchee Valley College on Jan 3, 2023.

Harrison brings 32 years of experience in higher education to WVC. He comes to WVC from California State University Stanislaus-Stockton Campus where he served as a dean. Both his previous campus and WVC are federally designated Hispanic-serving institutions. Harrison has more than 20 years of experience working in the Washington state community and technical college system, including as an instructor and student services professional.

A passionate student-teacher-scholar, Dr. Harrison believes in the "Village" or community-centered approach to ensure the success of students, families, workforce, and economic development, and building healthy community ecosystems.

He and his wife, Stacey, have four adult children.

Dr. Harrison's grandmother was a missionary. His mother was the first in his family to complete high school and college. She went on to be a teacher and eventually the President of the National Education Association.

Dr. Harrison is a longtime member of the Rotary. He was part of the Polio effort in Africa.

Rachel Evey is the Executive Director of the Wenatchee Valley College Foundation.

She moved to Wenatchee in 2017 from her hometown of Bakersfield, California. Rachel plays a key role at the Foundation by raising funds to support students and the college. She believes education is an asset that can create a pathway of success for individuals and their communities.

Rachel is involved in a number of community organizations. She is a member of the Wenatchee Rotary, the NCW Estate Planning Council, and the Women's Service League of NCW. She was a part of the 16th class of Community Leadership Wenatchee Valley and was honored in 2019 as a Wenatchee Valley Business World 30 Under 35. Rachel is also a lifetime member and scholarship volunteer with the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.

When she isn't fundraising or bragging about the college, Rachel enjoys doing yardwork, hosting game nights with her friends, cooking dinner for her parents, and hiking with her dog, Douglas.

Rachel and Dr. Harrison presented a fantastic overview of WVC. Included is a $22 million Capital Project to replace an 80-year-old building on the campus.

Dr. Harrison explained that he is in the middle of working with the State and Federal funding/budget. He will be requesting local leaders and business owners to participate in strategy meetings to identify the needs of the community. His history with Rotary means that he is quite aware of the value of working in the community to improve education offerings to provide future workers and leaders for local businesses.

Here are some pictures from the Rotary Youth Exchange weekend in Merritt. We have a great group of new outbounds!
I thought I would share some photos in case you would like to put them in your club newsletters.

The Rotary club in Merritt did an amazing job hosting the kids. They planned activities like snowshoeing, ice fishing, and curling. They organized a delicious fry bread dinner at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, where we also learned about traditional medicine, drumming, and dance. Most of all, the kids loved being together!

A huge thank you to all the Wenatchee clubs for supporting the Youth Exchange Program!

Don shared that he recruited players from all over the world. One of the players, Brandon Porter, is from the Wenatchee area. He teaches at Cascade Elementary School.

Don, Joel, and Jahlin all talked about the excellent chemistry between all of the players. The players are all team oriented and unself on the court.

Joel Roberts (Kansas) and Jahlin Smith (North Carolina) answered questions.

They shared that their schedules usually involve working out in the morning, then heading to practice or a game later in the day.

They have both played basketball and plan to stay a part of the game after their playing days are over.
  • Joel plans to work with kids that are learning to play basketball to give back to his community, where his family has several businesses.
  • Jahlin plans to stay involved as a broadcaster or reporter. His degree is in Communications. Jahlin also shared that he has played basketball recently in China. It was difficult due to their very stringent rules regarding Covid. Their mask mandates extended further than here in the U.S.
Get out and support the Bighorns. I attended their first game. It was well attended, and the team played very well, nearly doubling the score of the other team.

Program - Stacy Gold,  Classification Talk

Stacy gave a wonderful presentation about her life and family.
She has two daughters and a wonderful husband.

Stacy grew up in Texas. She loved play-acting as an officer of the law. She was an FBI agent or other law enforcement officer chasing down bad guys on her grandparents' farm.

Stacy was raised primarily by her grandparents because her parents were working a lot.

Her faith has always been very important to her. The church she grew up in was made up of all boys, so she played tackle football at church events.

She moved to the Seattle area as a teenager. She ended up being best friends with someone that was completely different from her in nearly every way. They are still friends to this day.

Stacy and her family love Florida. They have a home there a mile from the beach and they travel to that location every chance they get.

Stacy is attending classes right now. Her ambition is to get the education required for her to become a real-life FBI agent! She and her family plan to move to Florida full-time in the next 5 to 10 years (or sooner if possible).

She is not sure where she will be assigned a position in the FBI, but she is excited to find out and live her dream.

Stacy will be with us for quite a while and we are excited for her to live out her dream.
