Program

"If you invest in girls, you invest in generations..."  Founded in 2011 by Ryan, his wife and  a few other Peace Corp teachers, the purpose of the Non-Profit Napali Youth Development Program (NYDP) is empowering girls through education. The main school is found in the town of Tadi, Chitwan in the low lands of Nepal. It is primarily a Hindu region with only 9 % of the population being Buddhist. The society operates within a caste system making it nearly impossible for some, especially females, to progress professionally without education. The culture favors education for males. Education is expensive and prohibitive without assistance.  A higher secondary education (grades 11-12), after passing a test for progression, will cost $200 per year for a total of $400. A college degree will cost $900 and a Masters Degree (2 yrs. at $400 per yr) will cost $800. Scholarship applicants are required to have family support and adhere to attendance and grades policies, etc. This organization is a organized under the Washington State 501 (c) Non-Profit laws. Membership contest continues.  So far 4 teams are on the board.  Two teams have 4 points and 2 teams have 2 points.  Sun Mountain is calling.

Bowling with the Challenge Scholars

Lots of fun at the bowling alley with our challenge scholars, two exchange students Mateo and Henning from Germany), and lots of family members.  Thanks to Joan Wright for organizing the party.

Special Guest Clyde Pangborn

Salina Danko, Education and Volunteer Coordinator for the Wenatchee Valley Museum introduced "Clyde Pangborn."

Clyde was channeled by Jake Lodato, Public Relations Officer for the Spirit of Wenatchee, and local Clyde Pangborn aficionado.

Clyde (aka Jake) provided a history of his life including his birth in the Brewster area and upbringing in Idaho, his acquisition of a plane from the US Army after WW1, and his relentless effort to fly nonstop across the Pacific Ocean.

You can learn more about Clyde and other important people of our past on Saturday, February 27 during the Museum's living history program.  The other figures from the past joining Clyde Pangborn on Feb 27th will be Susie Vickrey, Ludwig Solberg, Gordon Stuart, and Ida Burts.

Senior Dinner Plans.  Our target audience is not high school

seniors but the elderly in our community.  Jill Courtney is working on our senior dinner.  The convention center is not an option but St. Joseph's Catholic Church is a possibility.  Thank you Taro for letting Jill use your name and good standing in her outreach to them.

Mark Miller & Jennifer Bushong -- Town Toyota Center

Mark Miller, General Manager, and  Jennifer Bushong, Vice President of Marketing, Town Toyota Center joined us for breakfast.  Town Toyota Center has turned a corner in its development.  Controversies around funding are largely behind them and they are focused on marketing events to generate revenue while enriching the community.  Business such as Cordell, Neher & Co are stepping up to sponsor events that attract audiences the businesses hope to serve.

The main focus of Town Toyota Center is fun, followed closely by safety and cleanliness.  Recent fun has included Cheryl Crowe, great hockey with the Wenatchee Wild and its competitors in the British Columbia Hockey League, and the holiday ice show, Santa's Sleigh Ride.  Future fun is Stomp on February 1 (sponsored by Club member Kris Loomis and Cordell, Neher & Co),Winter Ice Gala with the Ice Theater of New York performing, the Northwest Mariachi Festival on March 18 and Hell on Hooves Rodeo on May 13 and 14.

Brags, Confessions, Announcements 1/12/16

Mateo, our exchange student, joined us for breakfast.  He enjoys school, plays indoor soccer and is learning to ski.  Impressive!  He and another student are competing at the state level with DECA, an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

Kevin Love was named Rotarian of the Month for January.  Kevin joined Sunrise Rotary in 1992.  He left in 2013 for travels outside the area but returned in 2015.  He is a former Treasurer and is a Paul Harris Fellow.  He is a great asset to club members, arriving at our meetings early and staying late to make sure all necessary tasks are accomplished. Thank you Kevin!

The membership contest has started.  Check for an email from Jim Adamson to learn your teammates.  Teams can earn points for bringing guests to meetings or having them join.  The winning team will have a weekend at Sun Mountain Lodge.

PJ in motion

• Dave Friemuth is a grandfather.  Jacob Christopher was born two months early and will be in the hospital for a bit but is otherwise healthy.  The family is doing well.
• PJ is back from Jackson Hole where he was made very happy with constant skiing.  He reported temperatures in the double digits below zero in the valley but warmer temps at the higher elevation due to inversion.  A good reason to be high all the time (at least in Jackson Hole.)  
• Brian Thorpe and his wife took a two week vacation on a small cruise ship touring the Caribbean.  It was a great time and he would do it again in a heartbeat.  (It was a lot warmer there than in Jackson Hole.)
• Joanne Rosenthal reminds us all to report our make-ups on the sign in sheet.  Thanks Joanne for your hard work to keep us organized.

Packing Friendship

Wayne Massing, Carol Adamson, & Jerry Karney stuffed sacks of food for distribution. Sacks are taken to local schools and sent home with kids so they will have food on the weekends.










School lunch programs make sure students have plenty to eat during the week, but many kids are on their own over the weekend.  This is where Packing Friendship comes in.  Local churches have stepped in to provide food for kids who might otherwise go hungry.

Our Rotary club, and the new WVC Rotaract Club help bag food every Wednesday afternoon.

Nima Duncan-Church Administration

For the last year,33 year old Nima Araghimo-tlagh Duncan has been in church administration at the Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He and his wife, Emma have lived here about 3 years. Nima was born to Iranian parents who migrated to the US and settled in Virginia Beach, VA. His parents later divorced. Nima chose his and career his life's passion after meeting and spending time with an air force member and his family. They were great examples to Nima and invited him to church where he connected deeply with the Gospel message which changed his life forever. He wanted to be devoted to the truth and what he believes.

Rotary Leadership Institute - this could be for you.

The Rotary Leadership Institute is the BEST way to train active club members, second only to PETs for quality of material. District 5060 is one of the more active anywhere in training members through the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI), and this year we have set the bar higher than ever!  It is proven that RLI grads are more engaged, and have a great Rotary experience getting to know more about our programs and many of their colleagues from other clubs and areas.  We have exciting new curriculum INCLUDING the Membership Matters & a new Social Media program.

Time to pay your dues

If you have not already paid your dues from last quarter (July-Sept), please do so.  The invoices came by email quite some time ago, so check your spam folder if you didn't see it.  You can call or email treasurer Lisa Tidd if you don't have it.  This quarter's invoices will be out soon, and many haven't paid the last quarter's dues yet.  This puts our club in a financial bind, so please attend to this as soon as possible.  Thanks.
