December 29, 2015 Meeting

Paul Harris Fellows Announced.  The entire Erik Holmberg clan were honored as Paul Harris Fellows based on the significant contribution made to the Rotary Foundation by each family member.  Erik's wife Kristen and children Drew, Ben, Lindy and Rawley were all present to accept the honor.  Each family member contributed at least $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation to earn this honor.

Club President, Wayne Massing, presented certificates.  Erik "pinned" each family member with the Paul Harris lapel pin.

Congratulations to the Holmberg family and to us for being fortunate enough to have Erik in our club.

Brags & Confessions

  • Jay Higgin's son Jonathan earned Eagle Scout honors.  Congratulations
  • Craig Robertson spent Thanksgiving in Colorado, driving there right behind a blizzard.  He recommends not trying that for your family vacation. He had a lovely trip to San Antonio where his wife, Mandy, was attending a conference.  He is most recently back from Puerto Vallarta, where Montezuma gained revenge.
  • Erik Holmberg reported that Lindy made a safe and rapid return from California where she traveled in support of an eight-year old cancer victim and his family who searched (in vain, sadly) for the young man's hero.  The 8-year old is my hero!  And so is Lindy.
  • Jim Huffman reports he is in maintenance mode and his health is well.
Surveying Club Member and Club Assembly.  Club members were asked to complete a survey about what is going well and what needs improvement with the Club.  A survey will be made available to those who did not attend, either through this blog or by email.

Club members then broke into groups representing several of our committees and brainstormed ideas to get better traction from the committees.  Several groups reported progress, with plans for regularly scheduled meetings to help jump start activities.  We need you on a committee (or two or four or six committees).  Please let Wayne or any of the officers or committee chairs know if you want to participate.  More to come on this topic at a future meeting.

Pot Draw.  Wayne Massing was the lucky pot draw winner. He came within an inch of the top pay out of $30.  Maybe next time...

Rotary Leadership Institute

Besides being a service organization, what sets Rotary apart is that we are also about leadership development.

District 5060 is one of the more active anywhere in training members through the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI), and this year we have set the bar higher than ever!  It is proven that RLI grads are more engaged, and have a great Rotary experience getting to know more about our programs and many of their colleagues from other clubs and areas.

We have (tentatively) scheduled the following course next spring:

   Yakima (March 19April 2 & April 16)

We have exciting new curriculum INCLUDING the Membership Matters & a new Social Media program.

Program - Classification talk by Earl Crowe

Earl is one of our newest Rotarians, becoming a member in October. He's been married 19 years and they have 3 lovely daughters. Earl was born in Everett, but he and his family more recently moved back to Washington from Ohio. He's an avid Seahawks fan and also enjoys camping, fishing, golf, tennis, but mostly in his spare time spending time with his family is most important. As our Chelan County Chief Deputy Coroner, Earl works on over 500 cases a year. He's required to be on call 24 hrs day/7 days a week, taking turns a week at a time with the County Coroner. The job requires that he be sensitive and caring (part people-person) as well as part investigator. His work includes homicides, suicides, accidental deaths, sudden deaths and unattended deaths-state law requires all unattended deaths be reported to the Coroner's Office. As the Chief Deputy Coroner his job includes: 1) Determining the cause and manner of death, 2) Thorough investigation of death ,3) Positively identifying the decedent, 4) Accurately and factually documenting the death scene, and 5) Determining whether an autopsy is required. Jokingly? Earl left us with his motto "Smile, tomorrow's going to be worse"

October 1st Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order by the President Elect, Allie Schank.  We had 2 guests (both named Mike!) Mike Battis from Ballard Ambulanc...
