Global Medical Brigades

Alex Rodriguez, one of our Wenatchee Rotary Challenge Scholars. has been given the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua and provide medical care to low-income families through the non-profit organization called Global Medical Brigades (GMB). UW GMB has an annual auction that raises funds for the trip.

Program

Wenatchee Wild Hockey coach Bliss Littler discussed the history of hockey, and the evolution of the Wild.  In 1980, 75% of the US college players were from Canada, which has always had a great junior hockey program.  Now the US has lots of programs, and hockey has become very popular, even in southern states with indoor program.

The Wild are now in the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League), which is very competitive.  Last year the Wild were 2nd in their division.  This year they are first in the league with an amazing 28-5-2 record.  Lots of the players are committed to division 1 colleges, and a couple could be drafted by the NHL.  The Wild also has a U-18 program which includes boys from all around the PNW, U-16 and U-14 programs which attract players from around the state, and hope to add a U-18 girls program in the next couple years.  The team has a big economic impact in our area, and provides support for many of the service clubs and charitable groups.

Terry Lillybridge was here to show us a quilt that featured several Sunrise Rotary bike ride T-shirts
from the past, including the first one in 1988.  He has ridden in many of our bike rides.

Our club was able to provide two bikes, helmets, and locks for the 9-year old twins of the family we adopted for Christmas.  Thanks to Lisa, Matt, and any others in the shopping crew.

Last chance to sign up for the January 14th Wild Hockey game and dinner will be on our January 3 meeting.  This will be a fun family social with our Challenge Scholars and their families, and a great way to support the first place Wild hockey team.  $20 for tickets and dinner.  You can email Jim Adamson at jncadamson@gmail.com to reserve your tickets.

What?  An indoor golf tournament?  Yes, but you'll have to check out the details on future emails. Great idea for a small fundraiser where you and a partner can set an appointment to use the indoor golf simulator at Golf, etc.

We had a fun Christmas party last Thursday.  About 70 showed up to eat a great Olive Garden dinner and exchange gifts.  Thanks to John McDarment for opening up his rooms at Ridgeline Graphics, and to Wayne and the fellowship committee for all the work setting this up.  See pictures below.

December 13 Meeting Notes

Announcements

Location change - Social tomorrow (Wednesday) at PYBUS (brewery) starting at 5:00.  They expect it to be busy so come as early as you can.  This will be a great informal pre-function for our Christmas party on Thursday.  Family and guests are always welcome.

Christmas Party Thursday night.  Due to large number attending (about 70), we ask that you only bring one White Elephant gift per couple if you are coming with spouse or guest.  Starts at 6:00 at Ridgeline Graphics.  BYOB.

Check your calendars.  We are having a Hockey social on January 14 with our Challenge Scholars and families.  $20 per person includes dinner in a private room and the game tickets.  The Wild are leading their division (British Columbia Hockey League), and ranked third in the entire Canadian Junior Hockey League.  We'll need you to sign up by January 4 so we can purchase a block of tickets.

Our club and members are participating in a fundraiser for family of the young man that was killed when struck by a car last month.  They would like to get back to Guatemala.  Our club donated $500, and members chipped in another $170 by passing the hat.

Taro Masuda spent the weekend with the district YE (youth exchange) kids at Silver Star (near Vernon, BC).

Brian Thorpe paid for missing so many meetings (glad to have you back Brian).  He will have three daughters getting married this summer (all different dates).

Lucas paid because he forgot his visa in Vernon, and almost couldn't get back into the US after the YE weekend.

Kevin Love's wife, Lynn,  was featured in the Good Life.  He will be going to his first Seahawk game Thursday and will miss our party.  Kevin was also the subject of the "shotgun classification talk" today.

Rebecca Lyons is back from too weeks in China.

Joel Banken's son, Isaiah, will be our outbound YE student next year, and just found out he will be going to Spain. Ole.

Program

Steve Robinson (right) and Gil Sparks presented on Pybus 2.0.  They gave a history of the facility, a look at how the non-profit works, and a glimpse future plans.  The 25,000 sq, foot building was purchased by the Chelan County Port District ($5M) and Mike & Joanne Walker ($5M) in 2010.  Through the public/private partnership, the building was remodeled, and opened in 2013.  Pybus is a non-profit run by a 16 member Board of Directors.  They support other non-profit groups.  Pybus has 17 year-round merchants and employees 100 people.  The plan is to expand and remodel the annex to house meeting rooms, businesses, and restaurants  Steve and Gil showed slides and renderings of Pybus, then, now, and in the future.

Lucas had a big week last week!  He spent Thanksgiving with the extended family of his host family. Then he went to Seattle and visited Pike Place Market and took a ride in a Tesla!!!  He was also able to attend Mission Ridge opening and was lucky enough to get stuck on a chair lift.

The Bike Ride Committee met and has some very cool stuff for the June 3rd bike ride.  If you haven't already blocked off the day on your calendar, do it now!  We need all hands on deck for the 20th anniversary of our club's biggest fundraiser.

There is a financial aid workshop for challenge scholars on Wednesday.  All mentors received an email regarding the details.

Laura reported that the Rotaract club made $200.00 for CASA.  At right are some of the stocking stuffers they purchased for the kids.

Program:

Doyle from Lighthouse Ministries presented to our club today.

Doyle joined Lighthouse Ministries three years ago after realizing that he wanted to help people that were just like him.  He reminded us that we could all be in the same position as many of the people that the Lighthouse Ministries help.
The organization was founded in 2009 by Bob Rogers who is still involved in the organization.  Currently there are 7 active programs.  These programs include:

• The Lighthouse Soup Kitchen which feeds about 5000 servings per month.
• The Food Distribution Ministry which distributes approximately 168,000 servings per year.
• Grace House which is a transitional house for Women and Children.  The capacity is 40 people and is currently at 16 women and 19 children.
• Gospel House provides emergency housing for entire families.
• Mission House which provides transitional housing for men.
• Lighthouse Clinic which provides free or reduced medical and dental care.
• King's Garden Christian Preschool which has been in existence provides interactive preschool for 3-5 year olds.  The current class has 19 children.

Lighthouse Ministries is currently looking at consolidating it's efforts in a large building they were recently able to acquire.  The monetary goal for the organization is $744,000.00.  They are approximately $189,000 short of their goal.  If you would like to donate to this amazing local project, click here.

Alan took his mom and the kids to the woods to gather trees for Christmas and left with 5!

ROTARY FOUNDATION NAMED WORLD'S OUTSTANDING FOUNDATION FOR 2016

The Association of Fundraising Professionals has recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual Award for Outstanding Foundation.

The award honors organizations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honorees.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from the AFP, which gives us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation’s centennial year,” says Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee. “The continued strong support of Rotary members will help us keep our promise of a polio-free world for all children and enable the Foundation to carry out its mission of advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace. We look forward to another 100 years of Rotary members taking action to make communities better around the world.”

“While almost everyone is familiar with Rotary, not everyone may realize just how much of an impact Rotary and The Rotary Foundation have had on countless people and communities across the globe,” says Jason Lee, AFP president and CEO. “On behalf of the entire charitable sector and people around the world, all of us at AFP are honored to be able to recognize The Rotary Foundation as our 2016 Outstanding Foundation.”

AFP’s committee of judges cited Rotary’s comprehensive campaign to eradicate polio as a major driver of the selection. They also mentioned that Rotary applies a methodical, purposeful approach to support a wide variety of causes, from providing clean water to educating the next generation of peace professionals.

Meet Our New Members

Robin DeRock

Robin is a Nursing preceptor, Staff educator, Rehab Admissions Coordinator, and Case manager at Confluence Health-Wenatchee Valley Hospital.  Her hobbies include HOCKEY, playing bad golf, crafting, hockey, sleeping in, travel, wine tasting, hockey.  After 24 years of floor nursing, she’s gone back to school, so homework is now a "hobby".  Oh, and Rotary. ;)  One thing that is unique about her is that she used to be shy, and she detest peas.

Her husband, Richard, is President Elect of the North Club, and director of Link Transportation.  He likes playing golf even worse than Robin, reading, yelling at the TV, yardwork, watching bad sci-fi, spending every waking moment thinking how lucky he is to be married to Robin.

Kids: 1) Birthed children:  Alicia - 28 yrs old, married, teacher, lives in East Wenatchee has their only 2 grandchildren.  Alex- 26 yrs old, single (taking applications), lives in Wenatchee, is an EMT with Ballard.

         2) Foreign born (AKA: Imports):  They have hosted 16 (maybe 39 or 74) exchange students

         3) Domestic brand: (AKA: Athletes who eat A LOT): They’ve hosted 12 athletes between the Wild and the Applesox.

Chris McDarment

Chris grew up in Wenatchee, and went to Harvey Mudd College in Los Angeles, where he graduated with an Engineering degree.  He has worked for Chelan PUD for over 20 years and is now the System Operations Manager for the PUD. 

Chris enjoys puzzles, traveling, and mysteries like astronomy.  He is a dog lover and his family has fostered many puppies from the humane society.  He is an Eagle Scout and is active in the Boy Scouts at the Troop and Council levels.  Chris learned "service above self" at an early age through Scouting, as well as through the example of his wonderful parents, John & Betsy.

Chris’ wife, Holly, was born and raised in Iowa, and she served overseas in the U.S. Army.  After she completed her tour in the Army, she followed her parents out to this area, finding a job at Central Washington Hospital as a unit secretary.  She is now a stay at home mom who doesn't know what stay at home means, as she is active in their Church, the Scouts, and the community.  

Chris and Holly met in Leavenworth on a blind date.  Holly likes to read books and cook, but is an avid sports fan as well.  They also enjoy playing cards with friends.

They have two boys, Braden is an Eagle Scout and is at the University of Washington, and Brian is a Life Scout, the step before Eagle, is a junior at Wenatchee High School.  He is in the high school band and on the swim team.  They also have two dogs (Grace, a German Shepherd and Jack, a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, a Humane Society rescue).

Laura Singletary

Laura is new to the Wenatchee area and during her free time, loves exploring her new surroundings.  She moved here in May and is paving the way for her family to follow.  Her husband, Michael, is the registrar at Watcom Community College.  They are the proud parent of two beautiful daughters.

Laura is the Director of Student Programs at Wenatchee Valley College.  She is passionate and honored for the opportunity to work with student leaders and supports Student Government, Clubs, Residence Life, and Campus Activities.  After finishing her transfer degree from Tacoma Community College, Laura earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in Society, Ethics, and Human Behavior.  She worked in the court system for seven years and has since completed her M.Ed. in Adult Education from Western Washington University.  Laura plans to pursue her Doctorate of Ed. in Organizational Leadership beginning Fall 2017.  Until then, she plans to spend every ounce of her free time with family and friends, and serving her new community!

Joel Banken

Joel and Julie met in college at Pacific Lutheran University and got married 26 years ago here in Wenatchee where Julie grew up.  They spent two years in Ecuador as Peace Corps Volunteers before Joel went to medical school at WSU and UW.  They lived in Yakima for three years while Joel did his residency in Family Medicine.  In 2001, they moved home to Wenatchee, where Joel is a family physician at the clinic in East Wenatchee.  He and Julie have two boys.  Zachary is 15 and is a sophomore at Wenatchee High School.  Isaiah is 17 and is finishing his senior year of high school and will graduate from the Running Start program in June.  They were all very excited to find out on Sunday that Isaiah was chosen to go be a Rotary exchange student next year.  They have had a wonderful time hosting Lucas this year, and are looking forward to being part of the Rotary Exchange Program.  Joel has loved traveling ever since he was a high school exchange student himself in Mexico.  He also loves hiking and biking around Wenatchee, and is a huge fan of electric cars.

The Foundation Award was presented to Wayne today.  This award represents our club having 100% participation in donating to the Rotary Foundation.  Additionally, our club has 100% participation as Sustaining Members ($100.00 or more per member).  We are one of only tow clubs in our district with this distinction.

 A big thanks to Leonard for speaking for a few minutes regarding the history of Rotary. Leonard joined Sunrise Rotary in 1968 and has watched the club participate in many projects including the train depot down at waterfront park, the performance shelter at Centennial Park, the 30 years of the Bike Ride and the growth of the Challenge Scholarship Program.  Leonard gave the induction charge to the new members.

Brags and Confessions:

Robin loves Hockey and there was something about getting lots of points.

Kathleen told us about AJ, a challenge scholar, being a dancer in the Holiday Spice performance. Kathleen gave us a little hip hop preview!  She also found some calculus tutors!

Alice had hand surgery but was still able to pay a dollar in congratulations of Russell Wilson's performance against the Pats on Sunday!  Go Hawks!

Erik paid a dollar for the Husky win this weekend and then psychically paid a dollar for their future win this weekend.  He also paid $20.00 because his mug was in the paper- in color!

John welcomed his son an daughter-in-law to Rotary.

PJ was happy to report a new door for the Women's Resource center and bids us all farewell until April.

Tom is 80 and highly recommends NOT eating at the Ardenvoir cafe.  Better luck on your 90th birthday lunch, Tom.

Our Classification talks today were from Matt Eastman and Bobby Black.

Bobby Black is originally from Orange, CA and eventually made his way to Wenatchee.  It was at the Wenatchee city pool that he met his wife, Brook.

They went to Western together, graduated and were married in Chelan. They have three daughters, Lauren (9), Paige (6) and Natalie (2).  The girls have taught him the beauty and amazement of non-stop communication.
Bobby was not always a hiker but after a miserable first hike to Lake Ruth and a subsequent difficult but less miserable hike over Aasgard pass, Bobby is now an avid hiker and has summited Mount Rainer with his Father in Law, Keith.  He currently works at North Cascades Bank as a loan officer.




Matt Eastman was born in Spokane and was
raised a Cougar.  After his graduation from WSU, he moved to Bellevue but didn't like how populated it was.  He and his wife moved back to Wenatchee in 2005.  They have two kids, Ellie and Finnegan.  Finnegan was named after his wife's 12% Irish Heritage but further investigation showed that Finnegan is actually Scottish.
Matt is an avid hunter and fisherman and was able to do a big hunt in Canada where he and his brother both killed a Moose. He also enjoys skiing and other outdoor activities.  Currently he works at Eastman Insurance.

Congratulations to Sunrise Rotary's Newly-est Weds:  Leslie and Mike.  They had a great time in Vegas and are now Happily Hitched.

On November 29th we will have a Club Assembly which is just a "taking care of business" kind of day.  Jim has been very busy preparing an onslaught of horrific jokes to lead us into 2017.

The Rotaract Meetings last week went very well with a total of 8 students showing interest.  20 are needed for a charter so keep getting the word out.

Earl mentioned a fundraiser that is being put on by Columbia Elementary school.  Donate $20.00 and get a free 3 month subscription to the Wenatchee World and the Washington Post.  100% of the money goes to the school.

Lisa Parks attended the Rotary Leadership Institute in Yakima and said it was really great.  The next one for our district is in Ellensburg, March 4, 18 and April 1.

Tom:  Went to Chicago and drove around his grandkids for two days. Spent a nice time on his son's boat for his pre-80th birthday bash.  He is now officially retiring (again) so he can travel more!

Presentation today was about The Rotary Foundation.  Thanks, Jerry, for a great presentation!

The Rotary Foundation was first conceived in 1917 by Arch Klumph and was officially named in 1928.

In 1947, Paul Harris had requested before his death, that money be donated to the Foundation in Lieu of flowers.

By 2006 there we over One Million Paul Harris Fellows (donors of $1000.00 or more).

In 1980, The Rotary Foundation committed to ending Polio.  As of 2015, the number of polio cases has decreased 99.9%.  We are SO CLOSE!

The basic idea of the fund is that each year, money is donated.  That money is held for 3 years to collect interest.  It is released three years later.  So, money donated in 2013 is being used in 2016. This interest collected is used for the administration of the Foundation which means that 100% of the money YOU donate goes to the work that the Foundation does, NOT the management of that Foundation.  (be aware that this is often difficult to find in organization, many times, a large percentage of your $1.00 goes to administration)

Presentation:

Today's presentation was from a group who toured Kyrgyzstan.  They shared a nice slide show about their tour.  A relationship with this country has been in the making for years.

Rotary Foundation Month

This is Rotary Foundation Month, and celebrates doing good in the world through the donations made by Rotarians.  These donations change lives around the world.  The Rotary Foundation (TRF) will celebrate 100 years in 2017.  At the 1917 RI convention, outgoing Rotary President Arch Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.  The Rotary Club of Kansas City made the first donation of $26.50.

Sally Brawly, Eastmont Parks Director, talked about the proposed $4M levy (bond) to improve the Eastmont pool, replace the playground, and add a splash pool.  The pool was built in 1973 and covered in 1076, and has undergone typical and costly maintenance and repairs.  The current playground was built in 1969, and is too costly and impractical to repair.  The levy is the first  since 2007.  The Municipal Park District was formed in 2004, and is not part of the city or county.

Spouse of late member Bob Church (Lorraine) donated $80 thanks to some yard work done by PJ Jones.

Next club social will be Wednesday, November 9 at the Columbia River Brewery.  Come anytime, but planned start is 5:30.  Bring spouses and guests.

Kathleen reported on bike ride changes for next year.  She, Mike Thorburn, Alan Walker, and Alice Thompson have been meeting periodically.  Changes include starting and ending the ride at Pybus, selling jerseys on the internet (giving a different item with their registration), staggered start, and beer garden opening at 10:00 (Wenatchee Brewery providing beer).

The Rotaract is being formed, and potential member Laura Singletary, WVC Director of Student Program, is having meetings Nov. 9 (1:00) and Nov. 10 (3:00).  We are welcome to attend.

$1200 were raised on World Polio Day by a few people collecting money by Cherry Creek Radio, and donations at the Poilo potluck last week.  Donations were matched by an individual, and then matched again by the Gates Foundation making the total $6000.

Lucas showed us his "bucket list" of things he hopes to see and do while here this year.  As his host club, we can make it happen.  Call him when you can take him somewhere, or for coffee, dinner, etc.

Eric Holmberg will emcee their Boy Scout troop's last Eagle Scout presentation.  The troop will be closing after 96 years of service. Eric and Jay Higgins have been leaders there for years.
Rebecca Lyons is celebrating 10 years since she adopted her daughter from Guatemala.
Lucas (our YE student) had dinner with Carol and Jim, and bragged that he beat them in the game they played.  Payback will come, Lucas.

Representative Dave Reichert will be honored at the Wenatchee Rotary meeting on Thursday, 

October 27 as a Polio Eradication Champion Award winner, one of five U. S. Lawmakers, for 

being instrumental in providing U.S. government funding for the polio eradication efforts in the 

Center for Disease Control and the US Agency for International Development.  All Rotary clubs

in the area are invited to attend.

We want to:

1.    Congratulate him on his recognition with local Rotary constituencies

2.    Thank him for his leadership on Rotary’s highest priority issue among 

     Republican colleagues in the House;

3.    Provide him an opportunity to speak about his leadership role in

Weekly Events

Lots going on this week.  We had no meeting Tuesday because we attended the World Polio Day event with the other area clubs at the Wenatchee Valley Museum.

Carol Adamson helped members of the Wenatchee club drum up donations in front of Cherry Creek Radio Monday morning.  After being matched by Bill Gates Foundation, over $6000 was raised for polio eradication.

Former Wenatchee Rotarian, and Rotary International President (1985-86), Ed Cadman was one of the key people who got the Polio Plus program started.

 Polio information, and an old iron lug that was used to keep paralyzed polio victims breathing.

Lots of food and fun at the Museum, where 4 clubs in our area were represented.  We had a great turnout from our club.

Saturday club members cleaned up our 2 mile stretch of the highway south of Hydro Park.  The 10 members put in 40 man hours and collected 49 big bags of garbage.  Thanks to Wayne Massing, Dave Freimuth, Heath Rush (Patty's' husband), John McDarment, Dick Baker, Taro Masuda, Maggie Nelson, Kathleen McNalty, Earl Crowe, and PJ Jones.

Carol Adamson and Vice-president Lisa Parks completed the third Rotary Leadership Institute class in Yakima.

Jim Adamson spent the weekend in Edmonton, Alberta giving presentations at the District 5370 Fall Training Assembly.

October 18 Meeting

Program

We met at the Wenatchee Police station, where new police Chief Steve Crown and Capt. Edgar Reinfeld talked about the state of the police department, and gave us a tour of the facility.  The department has 38 officers (3 bilingual and 2 Latino) and 9 support staff.  The biggest challenge is staffing issues to cover all the preventative quality of life issues (gangs, youth violence, street drugs, the homeless, etc.).  Officers are trained for mental health and ethnic diversity issues.  They have prevention programs that include better training, outreach to younger kids, participation in community events, and school resource officers.  They discussed some of the new technology issues, which are costly (body cameras), but helpful (real time crime mapping).

The Challenge Scholars and mentors met at Abbys for pizza last Sunday.

We had our first monthly social at Pybus last Wednesday, and had a great time (scroll down to see pictures below).  Next one is scheduled for Wed., Nov. 9 at Columbia River Brewery.

October 28-29 - District Training Assembly in Osoyoos , BC.  This is especially good for officers and committee chairs.  Our club will reimburse the registration fee.  This is a great resort about 2.5 hours north (just across the Canadian Border so take your passport or enhanced driver's license). Rates in Canadian currency, which is a great deal for us.  Take your significant other and spend a couple nights.  Check it out and register here.

Extra Curricular Activities

Several of our members spent time at WVC talking to students about joining a college Rotaract group.  We had several interested that signed up to get more information.  Jenny Rojanasthien helped organize this, and Wayne, Kathleen, Joanne, Carol and Jim A. volunteered at the table, with WVC President (and member) Jim Richardson making a guest appearance.

Wednesday night, about 20 folks showed up for a social at Pybus.  We enjoyed visiting with spouses and a couple people who are interested in join our club.  Pictured are 12 of the group.  Not to worry if you missed the fun - we will be having a PUB social the second Wednesday of each month.

Lisa Parks and Carol Adamson completed another Rotary Leadership Institute on Saturday in Yakima.  Our club has had several members complete the three-Saturday RLI course over the past three years.

Wayne Massing's wife, Karen, is having knee issues.
Eric Holmberg finally got back from a three week trip to Dubai and several countries in Africa.  He went on a safari, and stayed in a village where they saw a system set up to give families light in their houses.  Mansouir Ravassipour and John MacDarment each donated money to fund these.
Renee Parkins is off to Las Vegas and Lake Havasu for a wedding (not hers).
Carol and Jim Adamson's son and grandsons (ages 10 & 12) ran their first half marathon in Spokane.
Jerry Karney announced the "Breath of Air" concert at Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church October 15 at 6:00.  All proceeds go to the Lighthouse Ministry.
Patty Rush's granddaughter, (2013 Apple Blossom Queen) got the lead part in White Christmas, which will be in Seattle around Thanksgiving.

Program

George Wilson, retired Secret Service, discussed the history of the SS, and shared some stories of his duties on the US presidential detail.  He started in 1969 with Nixon, and continued with 6  more presidents, through Clinton's second term.  He began his career in Chicago, then was based in Seattle until he retired in 1997 to Lake Wenatchee.
