Wenatchee Sunrise Change-Over Dinner 21 June 2022

Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club gathered at the Wenatchee Museum and Cultural Center on Tuesday, 21 June 2022, to say goodbye to our outgoing Club President Kathleen McNalty, and welcome incoming Club President Robin DeRock.

Alan Walker, Past President, acted as the ceremony Master of Ceremonies. The evening began with a brief social with various drinks.

Ruth Dagg led the group in a brief prayer, and the audience said the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

The attendees enjoyed a fabulous dinner from Country Boy's Barbeque in Cashmere. BBQ pulled pork, BBQ's chicken thighs, baked beans, coleslaw salad, and chocolate cake (from Albertson's). Veggie burgers were also cooked to order in the museum kitchen. Many bottles of local wines were also enjoyed.

After dinner, Alan welcomed Kathleen to the stage. She called her Club Officers and Board of Directors to the stage, where she presented gifts to those in attendance:

Kathleen presented gifts to Sargent at Arms Wayne Massing and Kevin Love for their roles in setting up the weekly meetings and taking them down.

Earl Crowe, Immediate Past President, made a brief appearance at the ceremony, just long enough to be presented with the Mark Anderson "Marky" Presidential Service Award for the Rotary year of 2021- 2022. Earl's tireless work on the club's Road Apple Roulette fundraiser got approval with the Wash. State Gambling Commission and netted the club over $8,000 to be used for our scholarships program and other projects. Family health issues prevented a longer stay for Earl.

Richard DeRock, District Governor for Rotary District 5060, called Robin DeRock, Club President Elect (and his wife!), to the stage to be sworn in as Club President for Rotary year 2022-2023. 

Robin, in turn called her Club Officers and Board of Directors to the stage, where she presented gifts to those in attendance:

Alan Walker called all the POOPS (Past Order Of PresidentS) to the stage. Alan Walker, Bill McDowell, Craig Reece, Dave Freimuth, Jim Huffman and Wayne Massing. (Missing were: Jim and
Carol Adamson, Earl Crowe, Milt Herman, Taro Masuda, and Erin McCool.) Alan introduced the POOPS and proceeded to tell those in attendance about Kathleen's BAD jokes, then the POOPS read some examples. About 6 minutes was enough, so the POOPS went into a huddle to discuss whether Kathleen should be allowed to join the prestigious POOPS. After an elaborate discussion, the vote was 4-2 against, then it was unanimous 6-0 in favor. Welcome Kathleen! You're a POOP now! 

Kathleen was again called to the stage to be presented with gifts and flowers from the club. Alan Walker and District Governor Richard DeRock presented her a Rotary Club gavel plaque in recognition of her dedicated service to the club and to Rotary International during her 2021-2022 year.

The Change Over Dinner ended with everyone having fun! A good time was had by all!

New Member Induction:  Stacy Gold

Jim introduced Stacy as our new member.  Stacy was a Sunrise member years ago, and we are glad to have her back.  Stacy grew up in Texas, moved to Seattle when she was 12, returned to graduate in Texas and got her AA degree, moved to Wenatchee and started in the nursing program at WVC.  She had to leave the program when she was pregnant with her first daughter, and had a second daughter a couple years later.  After various job, and being a stay-at-home mom for 5 years, she found a dream job at SAGE, a domestic abuse treatment center.  A few years ago she met Dan Gold.  They were married 2 years later in Hawaii.  Welcome Stacy!

Announcements

Assistant Governor for our area, Shanley Crane, was here to present the club with district awards from Earl's year.  We received the RI Presidential Citation for completing goals in several required areas.  This award is earned by few clubs in the district.  The other award was for our polio plus contributions of at least $100 per capita.  Way to go Sunrisers, and way to go Earl for getting us through a tough COVID year with such great accomplishments.

Robin was presented her correct Paul Harris Fellow +5 pin for contributions to The Rotary Foundation.

Kathleen presented the Rotarian of the Month to John Schapman to give to his wife who takes care of their 5 children.

Jim H completed his last day of immunotherapy.

Stacy's daughter scored 22 points to help her team win a basketball tournament.

Robin had fun at the RI Convention in Houston. She again mentioned her broken ribs that she blames her husband for.

Jim and Carol celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their grandson's high school graduation (and his AA degree) in Kent.  Their daughter is getting married next weekend.

Kathleen attended her first RI Convention, and is signed up for next year in Melbourne, Australia.

Wayne and Rebecca went to Chelan to observe and work at the glass recycling center started by the Chelan Rotary Club.  Check it out at https://911glassrescue.org.

Program

Newer member, Marcy Treat gave her classification talk today.  She came to Wenatchee to be the director of CVCH's New Path, an outpatient substance abuse program. How she got here is quite a story.  Marcy, one of 5 siblings, was born in Selah on her dad's birthday.  She got her GED at age 16, and had a full-time job to help the family finances.  Marcy is a single mom.  She had her first child at age 17, and he second daughter 12 years later.

Marcy started on her career path when she worked as a secretary at a social service agency, then in a residential facility for youth, and at 19, got a job at a Yakima detox center.  She went to college at 21 and got certified as a substance abuse counselor.  At 26 she became a certified substance abuse professional.  Ten years later she took her previous boss' job, and eventually moved to Wenatchee.

New Path started small, but now has 6 staff and 150 clients. They do outreach to youths and adults, as well as outpatient substance abuse work.  Marcy is passionate about helping people, loves her work, and enjoys volunteering and connecting people.  She like hiking, snowboarding, and camping.

Allie bragged about the first AppleSox game (which they won).

Ruth is tired from being with grandkids, and bragged that her son is the Commander of the new Technology Information Support Company.

Wayne seeded some areas in his yard, and was sad that the rain washed away his new lawn seeds, so he was replanting.

Carol bragged about the challenge scholar she is mentoring.  A complete turn around.  She graduated last Friday, and was given the EHS "Most Effort" award. She is also working, and moved into her first apartment with a friend.

Alan bragged that he and Kelly went to the Chris Stapleton concert at the Gorge last weekend.  He also bragged that Chelan/Douglas Community Action Council (where he is the director) was awarded the Westside HS Partner of the Year.

Robin injured her ribs taking out the trash right before they left for the Rotary International Convention in Houston (blames her husband).  It hurts to laugh, and she's doing a lot of that.

Program

Today we improvised, and spent time talking about RI Conventions.  Robin and Richard DeRock were on zoom to give some highlights of the Houston Convention. 11,000 are in attendance from all over the world.  All the RI dignitaries are there (past presidents, president, incoming president Jennifer Jones - our first woman president, 17 Board members, and 17 Rotary Foundation trustees). There was entertainment, speakers on the polio progress, Ukraine relief, and other projects.  They have also had time to explore areas around Houston with guided tours.  Robin went to the Johnson Space Center, Buckey's Truck Stop, and the underground mall.  They had a huge House of Friendship where people can look at projects, hear about Rotary Fellowships and Action Groups, and meet Rotarians from all over the world.

Jim A talked about the experiences he and Carol had at the Chicago RI Convention in 2005, where over 40,000 people celebrated the 100th year of Rotary.  They also attended the RI Convention in Copenhagen, where they experienced home hosting and events in Denmark and Sweden.

Wayne talked about the RI Convention he and Karen attended in Sydney.  It was a game changer for him.  He is going to the next convention in Melbourne, Australia, and is again the district promotional chairman for the RI Convention.

Craig talked about all the people who are using Rotary Park, and that we all need to check it out.  There are opportunities to help support the park, the Peace Pole Project, and the new pickleball court construction.  Forms will be on the tables each Tuesday.  

Craig also talked about the Ukrainian families that are settling in the area, the support they will need, and how we can help.  Wayne raffled off a Rotary vest and two shirts, and club voted that the money go to the community refugee fund.  He also mentioned how good we have it in the US in contrast to the people in Burundi.  He's looking for members who would like to go with him to see the work that is being done there to help the people.  He is looking for a Rotary club there to help support a possible Rotary international project.

After Notes

Raffle ticket drawn was Milt's, but he didn't pick the right marble.  Bring your money next week, the pot is growing (over $430 next week, and a small amount of marbles left).

Kathleen is over Covid, and celebrated in Seattle last weekend at a Mariners game, art museum, and great food.

Woody's family home sold, and his dad was inducted in the Hall of Fame at the high school he served for 45 years.

Robin praised the PUD for working all night to fix a water main break by her home.  She is also having another doctor appointment to see if they can figure  out her esophagus.

Kathleen presented the goals she had set for this year, and what our progress has been.  Her mission was to have our club be a place we would want to bring friends and guests, and we have had lots of those.  Overall, we have had a very successful year.  Here are some results:

May 24 Meeting Notes

Welcome guests Carly Sagerser (our outbound youth exchange student), Stacy Gold (soon to be inducted as new member), Wayne Fields, and Mastafa Jibrin.

We met in the small room and had a full house, with President-elect leading the meeting.

Bike ride meeting was changed to next Tuesday (May 31) at the Hilton, 5:00.

Changeover dinner June 21.  Come to the BBQ at the museum, help celebrate a great year, roast Kathleen and bring in Robin DeRock as our next president.

Earl gave a wrap up of the first annual Road Apple Roulette (RAR) Raffle.  We first watched the entertaining play-by-play video recording the horses coming down the parade route, and the first poop to drop on section 4.  Thirty-two of our members were involved in selling tickets or working our booth at events.  2,649 tickets were sold that brought in $13,245.  With the sponsorships (thanks to Earl), and after giving away $12,000 in prize money, and paying other raffle related expenses, we cleared over $6500!!  Amazing!  A HUGE thanks to Earl for spearheading this project from start to finish.  

Earl presented awards to the top ticket sellers.  Kathleen (online) was first with over 400 sold.  Carol and Jim as a couple (mostly Carol) sold over 500.  Earl sold over 200, Wayne over 150, and Eric 104.

Brags and Confessions

Ruth survived her senior recital, with some of her students dropping out with health issues.  It was also her birthday (which someone else had to announce).

Joel's son, Isaiah, is getting married on September 10.  He and Julie are hosting a Rotary exchange student from Chile in August. We need one more host family (the 2nd) for our incoming student from Argentina.

Robin caught up on her sleep after the district conference, and she and Richard head to the Rotary International Convention in Houston next week.

Amber is organizing fundraisers for the Humane Society.  The first is a spaghetti dinner at Blueberry Hill in Manson on June 11.  The second is a golf tournament at Three Lakes on June 18.

Program

Kathleen introduced Cari Horning, the North Central Educational Service District (NCESD) Career Connected Learning Specialist.  Her job is working with schools to help get kids connected to local careers.  Cari works in the Grant County area, but Chelan/Douglas has a person in the same role.

The focus is on career awareness, preparation, exploration, skills, training, and education.  They create experiences between high school students and local industries by setting up tours, guest speakers, occupational exploration, job shadows, internships and apprenticeships.  Cari showed a short video on the importance of applying for financial aid.

May 17 Meeting Notes

Announcements

We had a great Rotary District Conference last weekend hosted by District Governor Richard DeRock and First Lady Robin.  Thursday was a dinner with salmon, authentically cooked by some local Native Americans. Tribal Elder Randy Lewis spoke about the history of the area and the importance of salmon to their people. Friday was a time for optional activities around town (golf, pickleball, wine walk, bike ride, pub crawl, etc.), and the popular home hosting, where area Rotarians hosted our visitors for dinner.  Almost half the attendees of the conference were from Canada - fun!  Saturday was filled with internationally renowned speakers, awards, break out sessions on Rotary topics, evening band and dancing, and lots of fellowship opportunities.  Sunday morning was dedicated to Rotary youth programs (youth exchange, Interact, and RYLA - ask someone of you don't know what these are), and the passing of the torchy to next year's District Governor, Karl Ruether of Leavenworth Rotary.  Congrats to Richard and Robin on a great conference, and all the hard work they did for two years.

A thank you note was read form Barbara Tilly, thanking us for the $1500 donation to the Ukrainian families settling ion NCW.  There are about 30 people in Wenatchee and Soap Lake.

Speaking of Ukrainian refugees, there will be a benefit concert to raise funds to help the refugees in NCW (and those to come).  Gladsong will sing a variety of musical numbers, with all proceeds going to the refugees' fund.  Join us at the Grace Lutheran Church at 7:00

Pet Parade is June 18 at 10:00 at Pybus Market.  It will be a beach theme, with photo booth, parade, and food drive for the Humane Society.  We'll need some greeters and helpers that day.

June 21 is the Presidential Changeover Dinner, which will be a BBQ at the Museum.  Mark it on your calendar so we can celebrate Kathleen's year, and welcome Robin as our next president.

Allie, Amber, and Woody are doing the 50/50 raffle at the Applesox games to raise funds for the PAC and the Humane Society.  Any other charities we engage with on this?

Jim passed out information sheets on the Peace Pole Project at Rotary Park.  The work will start soon, but we have lots of money to raise.  The fliers had ways to donate.  You will hear more later, but think about who you may want to buy a tile, bench, salmon, to basalt column to honor.

Jim presented Karen Krisjensen of the East Wenatchee Rotary Club with her $500 winning from the Road Apple Roulette.

Jim bragged on Robin for the work she did helping to organize the district conference.

Kevin was back after complete knee replacement.  He said he is at 90%, but is shooting for 120%.

Carol put money in for Marcy's birthday (#40).

Besides being her birthday, Marcy said she is excited about moving to a new apartment.

Rebecca put in for Mari. She just turned 16 and has already had two hit-and-run accidents (not her fault).  Rebecca also added funds to the Salisbury Challenge Scholarship Fund for her birthday.  She celebrated in Seattle May 6.

Wayne confessed that he had the Ukrainian flag upside down at the opening ceremony at the District Conference.

Kelly got to see her granddaughter again.

Allie went to her first concert at the Gorge.

Robin is glad that the District Conference is done!  Our club presented a gift of 3 quilts in their honor at the District Conference.

She showed the club the 3 quilts we had put together for her and Richard in honor of the last two years of work and dedication to our district.

Program

Kathleen introduced Laura Merrill, Wenatchee City Executive Service Director, who talked about the future of the Riverfront Park .  She had slides and detailed project plans that outlined the process and schedule of gathering information and public input, design considerations and the preferred plan, and the development plan.  In addition to the 39 pages with this information were 54 pages of appendices detailing analysis, public engagement, design alternatives, cost estimates, and the design toolkit.

The project is projected to be done in three phases, ranging from 2022 to 2036. Way too much information to relate in the blog, but I'll have the detailed planning book there next Tuesday.  You can also check it out on the city website: www.wenatcheewa.gov (check out the tile walls at Rotary Park on the home page).

May 10 Meeting Notes

We finished a successful Road Apple Roulette fundraiser, and gave away $12,000 to 5 raffle winners.  Section 4 was the first to be pooped in on Saturday, and Cathy Ornelas, a para educator in Quincy was the big $10,000 winner.  Carol and Kathleen met her in Quincy to deliver the check.  Earl will give us the final report of tickets sold, income, expenses, etc. at next Tuesday's meeting, so you don't want to miss it.  See photos at bottom of page.

Bike Ride - next committee meeting is May 24, 5:00 at the Hilton Garden Inn.  Everyone welcome.

Rotarian of the Month - Kathleen selected Dave Freimuth as the April ROTM.  Dave has been updating the club calendars with speakers and events for quite some time, and does other things behind the scenes to serve our club.

New Member Induction - It is with much pleasure that we have added Glenn King to our
membership.  Sponsor Chris McDarment introduced Glenn, and membership chair, Kelly Walker, presented Glenn with his pin, license plate frame, and other Rotary items. The club did the traditional welcome.  Glenn is a retired Tree Top Vice-President of IT, and a hobby photographer.

Chris paid for Bill McDowell's vision of the winning poop section, and for Earl's and Kathleen's dedicated work to make the Road Apple Roulette a fun and successful event.

Ruth went to her youngest daughter's graduation, who graduated Magna Cum Laude in Biology in just three years.

Wayne met with other Rotarians at Joe's' Log Cabin. Alan paid for his lunch because he forgot his wallet.  PJ was there and gave him $20 to give to the club.

Program

Karen Rutherford introduced Wyatt Delozier, a 6th grader at Pinnacles Prep school. Wyatt is great at math and baseball.  He talked about his "Passion" project, which is to raise money for a library at the school.  The language arts teachers need lots of books for the students.

Sara Rolf, co-founder, talked about the forming of the school, and answered questions about it.  The charter school has been four years in the making, and this is the first year of operation.  Pinnacles was started as another option for a smaller school experience.  It has about 105 students in grades 6 and 7, and will expand one grade level each year through grad 12.  The 9 teachers also act as mentors.  Math , science, and humanities are taught each day, with  STEM and music every other day.

Much of the learning is experiential and hands on, with lots of learning taking place off campus in natural settings.  They have clubs  that meet the last half hour, and the students will be able to join the regular high school sports teams at the middle and high school levels.

Kathleen contributed $500 from her business, and Mansour gave $50 to the library project.

After Notes

Earl's raffle ticket was drawn, but he picked the wrong marble.  There are about 14 marbles left, and a pot of over $200.  Odds are getting better, and the pot is growing faster.

Next week's program will be Laura Merrill with an update on the waterfront development, and Earl with the RAR results.
