A great time at Ridgeline Graphics for our annual Christmas party.  Food by Olive Garden, music by Ruth Dagg and choir (?), white elephant gift exchange, and a raffle (Milt, Carol, & Kevin were the big winners with $50 each).

Christmas Party will be at Ridgeline Graphics on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6:00.  $20 per person will be added to your next quarterly invoice.  Families welcome.  Bring your own beverage (water provided), one White Elephant gift to exchange, and canned tuna for the Community Action food bank.

No morning meetings on Dec. 11, 25, and Jan. 1.  Please come on December 18.  We will have club elections.  Send any nominations for VP, and Leadership Team (Board) to Lisa.

Dec. 20 will be a pizza party for all our club members who volunteered at any of the Gorge concerts. Abby's west.  Time and email invitation to come later.

The Grace House is looking for help in furnishing and decorating rooms.  We can spend up to $250.

Program

Steve Maher, Our Valley Our Future Coordinator, discussed the affordable housing initiatives from the Our Valley Housing Report.  A diverse group of community members met for over a year and a half to develop a plan with 18 recommendations.  He talked about barriers and costs to future housing, where building is likely to take place, and types of buildings we might see.  The focus is on middle level market housing (household income levels from $41,800 to $74,000).  Steve handed out flyers summarizing the 18 recommendations.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH (TRF) - Yes, November is the month Rotary celebrates the great work of the foundation.  Funds from TRF are used for district and club projects in our communities and around the world.  We are changing and saving lives through our efforts using district and global grants.  Our club matches the $50 a members contributes to TFR, and we are looking to get 100% participation.  Let's all do our part to do good in the world through our TRF donation this year.

Program

Karen Francis-McWhite, Exec. Director of the NCW Economic Development District, talked about the organizations goals and progress in Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan Counties.  Their mission is to advance economic development in the three counties, promote partnerships, support development plans, and serve as gatekeepers for economic opportunities.

Past Events

Jim & Carol. Taro, and Wayne all attended the District Assembly in Chelan on Oct. 26-27. Wine and appetizers were served at the Chelan Chamber Friday night, followed by dinner.  Saturday included the main topics of membership, public image, The Rotary Foundation, and leadership, and breakouts on those topics, as well as sharing best practices of fundraising and projects.

That same Saturday, a group including Pete Blanksma, Jill Courtney, Kathleen McNalty, PJ Jones, Alan Walker, & Joel Bankin (and wife Julie and a friend), cleaned our section of the highway near Hydro Park.  Thanks for your time.

On October 24, all 6 area clubs got together for a potluck celebrating the accomplishments of Rotary's polio eradication program.  There were a couple stories of polio survivors, a short video, information about polio and where we are now, and some great raffle prizes.  Although it was not a fundraising event, over $1400 was collected from donations and raffle tickets that will be matched 2-to-1 by the Gate Foundation, and then sent to Rotary's polio campaign. We are so close!


Thanks to PJ for organizing the Habitat Fence building project.  The work was complected over three Saturdays, with over 12 members volunteering their time and talents.

We had a great turn out for the last 2nd Harvest food distribution in mid-October at the Wenatchee Community Center.  A total of over 850 families were served by our 5 food trucks this summer, with over 14,000 pounds of fresh food distributed.  Our club had around 20 of our members volunteer at one or more of the distributions.

 

Meeting Notes October 9, 2018

Announcements:

• Next Sunrise Social will be October 10th (TONIGHT!) at 5:30 p.m. at Bob's Burgers and Brews.
• The Bring A Guest Winner for the last quarter was Jim Adamson. Bring a guest an enter to win a gift certificate!
• Want to learn Pickleball?  Of course you do- who doesn't??   It's the fastest growing sport in America (wow, I looked that up and it is actually true- who knew??) . Head to 255 N. Georgia Avenue, East Wenatchee, on Saturday October 13th from 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.  Bring a water bottle, comfortable clothing, court shoes and a folding chair (optional).
• This Thursday, Oct. 11th is the last Second Harvest of the year. Be at the Community Center on Chelan Street at 10:30 a.m.
• World Wide Polio Dinner is October 24th at the Wenatchee Valley Senior Center.  Fun prizes and great fellowship!  6:00.  Be there!
• Highway Clean-Up is October 27th from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.   Bring gloves, water, decent shoes, and dress for the weather.  We need at least 8 people.

• Earl Crowe was late because his daughter is now on Safety Patrol.   He is also looking forward to an upcoming hunting trip with Ethan.

• Eric McCool went to Virginia to visit her new nephew.  She is also helping a Rotary Scholar with his Medical School application.

The Program today was a virtual trip to Armenia provided by David Barshes.  He has previously served in the Peace Corps in Armenia and now considers himself ABC (Armenian By Choice).

He gave a fun and interesting presentation about the country.

• Rod Tidd reported that we are able to secure 8 booths for the Def Leppard Concert this weekend.  We should be able to make A TON of money!  
• Joseph Bernard, our French exchange student, has been traveling around a bit including Canada. He noted that Canadian French is significantly different than the French he speaks.
• Chris McDarment said that Brian is in Thailand having a great time.  He has been speaking quite a bit of Thai as well as taking a class in Chinese.
• Carol Adamson reminded everyone to Save the Date of Wednesday, October 24th for World Wide Polio Day.   The potluck dinner will be at the Wenatchee Valley Senior Center. at 6:00. Bring an hors d'oeuvres, your own soda, beer or wine and a $5.00 donation.   Lots of fun raffle prizes.  This is a World Wide Rotary event so be sure and be part of it!
• Jim Adamson thanked everyone who handed out food at Second Harvest and let everyone know that the last one is October 11th, 10:30-2:00, at the Community Center on Mission.  A few people are needed to make this happen.
  
• Last weekend, the Leavenworth Rotary hosted their annual Road Rally.   Our very own Sunrise Adamson/Massing team took first place.  They will be returning next year to defend their title.  A great time was had by all.

• Rob Tidd attended the Zone Conference and had fantastic poutine.
• PJ attended his friend's memorial and said it was exactly what every memorial should be: A fire pit, BBQ, Beer and Stories!
• Robin DeRock also attended the Zone conference. On her travels back she came upon a tragic car accident but was able to be of assistance to the injured parties.  A small child was also involved and a child psychologist happened to be in the traffic jam. She said, although very said for the little boy to have lost his father in the accident, it was amazing how the perfect people were there at the perfect time.

Announcements:

• Our next club social is on October 10th at 5:30 p.m. at Bob's Burgers and Brews in East Wenatchee.
• Josef reports that school is good and he had a nice time traveling a bit, including going to Yakima.
• Carol asked us all to save the date October 24th for World Wide Polio Meal Day.   There will be a dinner from 6:00-8:00 at the Senior Center
• Alan is the new chair of the Bike Ride committee.   Meetings will begin this month, the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at Bob's Burgers and Brews. The next one is October 16th.
• Leslie has four free tickets to the Altheia Riding Center gala.  Contact her if you want them.
• PJ has a Habitat for Humanity project on September 29th and October 6th.  Several people are needed to help out.  Contact Ruth Dagg if you are available.
• Penny, from Leavenworth Rotary, wanted everyone to know about the Annual Road Rally on September 22nd. Start time is 11:30 a.m.- meet in the Cascade Highschool Parking Lot.  Donation of $10.00 per car.  Driving/walking treasure hunt!

• Earl Crowe was accused of kidnapping his own kid from the parking lot after school one day.  He has since been cleared of all charges. (no charges, just confusion :)
• Alan Walker went on a road trip that included Arches, Vail and Jackson Hole.
• Carol Adamson says Go Cougs!
• Jim Adamson said that he went a long trip- 18 hours of travel to Prince George- for a 3 hour meeting.
• Wayne Massing said 6 people came to the pool party and that the DMB concert at the Gorge raised $2316.00.
• Mansour has a cruise coming up.
• Erik Holmberg was in Atlanta for a Husky game but it also happened to be the same weekend a DragonCon- a multiday event in which thousands of people dress up in crazy costumes.  He is also going to be headed to London for the Seahawks game.
• PJ lost a dear friend recently.  The friend had saved his life in 1968 by digging out from under and avalanche.
• Kaitlyn VanWeerdhuizen was pulled over for have a picture of an alligator taped to her license plate.  Turns out Ethan's co-workers did it as some joke.   Kaitlyn didn't find it funny.  However, the police officer asked to keep the pictures to show everyone at the station.
• Leslie Trebotich is headed to Utah.
• Penny from Leavenworth Club donated $20.00 because she felt the entertain at the Sunrise Rotary Meeting was worth it!

• Erin McCool has a new nephew.  She and her husband celebrated an anniversary.  Also, she is celebrating the big 4-0 this month!
• Pete Blanksma celebrated his wedding anniversary.  He also helped move his daughter to Dallas which involved many, many hours of driving a u-haul
• Jim Richardson was pleased to announce that WVC has graduated the first class with a BA in Science and Nursing.
• Jill Courtney celebrated a birthday!
• Mansour Ravassipour has returned from Iran but his luggage did not.

The Sunrise Rotarians have been busy lately volunteering at Concerts and Open Houses.  Check out some photos:

First, last week Westside Highschool had a kick off and some Sunrisers agreed to help clean up.  Who knew clean up meant deflating bouncy houses?   Check out this video:

Also, we have participated in two concerts at the Gorge.  The first was Watershed and the second was the Dave Matthews Band concert.  We have one more coming up:  Def Leppard and Journey on September 29th.

Welcome Joseph

 Joseph Bernard, our youth exchange student from France, arrived at midnight on Wednesday, and was met by the Adamsons', and the Bankens' (his first host family).  After a looong day, he got a few hours sleep and headed to the San Juans with the Bankens'.  He'll be meeting with the school counselor on Tuesday to get his schedule and tour the high school.

August 21st meeting notes

Program

Our newest members, Ethan and Kaitlyn Vanweerhuizen, gave an entertaining classification talk today.  Kaitlyn was born in California, and also lived in OR, OH, and WA.  Her dream was to become a chef for the FBI, until she realized she had to actually know how to
cook.  She enjoys sports, and was a standout athlete in high school, participating in basketball, bowling (team went to State), and track, where she still hold the record for the discus (94 feet).  Kaitlyn graduated from WHS in 2015, and was married to Ethan in June of 2017.  She works at Jones & Jones/Betts Funeral Home as an admin assistant.

Ethan was born in Bellingham, and has lived his whole life (only 21 years) in Washington.  His dream was to be a linguist, until he realized he actually had to speak to people. After that he wanted to be a veterinarian.  He enjoys choir and drama, and participated in several musicals and plays in high school.  Ethan met Katilyn at Craft Warehouse where they both worked.  It didn't take long for the couple to get engaged, and then married.  Ethan is a customer service/sales rep for Haglund's Trophies.

The TGIF at Wayne's has been cancelled due to the smoke.  Hope to reschedule.

August 28 - Our service project to help clean up Westside HS after their back to school bash.  We will start at 7:30.  Bring your family to help.

September 11 - no morning meeting.  Instead we are all invited to attend the all area meeting on Thursday, September 13 at noon at Pybus ($10/person for lunch).  A UW medical school doctor will speak on rural health and the shortage of doctors we are facing.

September 22 - Family picnic at Utigard's orchard.  More details to come.

October 26-27 - District Fall Assembly at Campbell's in Lake Chelan.  This is a training for all club officers, committee chairs, and all members who want to have fun, learn more about Rotary, meet with other Rotarians from our district (including the Canadians), and hear about what other clubs are doing to be vibrant, growing clubs.

May 2-5 - District Conference in Kamloops, BC.  Discount for early registration ends August 31.

Meeting Notes August 14th

Announcements:

• Kathleen McNalty handed out backpacks at Westside HS.
  
• A big thank you to John and Betsy McDarment for hosting the All Area Club BBQ.   About 85 people attended despite it being one of the hottest days of the year.  Thank goodness for the pool!
• Jim Adamson announced that every time you bring a guest (children and spouses excluded), you will be entered into a quarterly drawing!
• Come to every meeting for 6 months and get a $10.00 gift card!  If you miss a meeting, be sure to attend a make-up meeting to maintain your perfect attendance!
• Wayne Massing reported that the Gorge fundraiser raised $1556.22 for the club for just one weekend.  If you want to help out at Dave Matthews or Def Leppard/Journey, let Wayne know.
• Save the Date of August 24th for a tentative pool party at the Massing residence!  Details coming soon.
• On September 13th at 12:00, Gil Sparks is hosting an all Rotary meeting regarding the challenges of health care in rural areas.   The event will be at the Pybus Event Center and is catered by Columbia Cafe.   There will be no Sunrise meeting that week, all Sunrisers are encouraged to attend this event.
• Matt Eastman announced that on Tuesday, August 28th, Westside School is having a back to school bash and our club is helping with clean-up from 8:00-9:00 p.m.  Sign up with Matt.
• Kathleen McNalty reminded everyone to look for Rotary invoices in their spam folder.

• PJ said his mom's memorial was great and then afterwards he headed to France to ski a glacier.
• Chris McDarment said that Brian successfully made it to Thailand.
• Carol Adamson attended her 50th Class Reunion.  Also, her grandson attended an amazing camp for children who have lost parents and he had a great time.
• Alan Walker celebrated his Daughter's 27th birthday
• Lisa Parks went fly fishing and successfully caught and released her own fish!

Program:

Erik Skansgaard came to discuss Trueblood Diversion, a program assisting those in the jail system with mental health issues.  Trueblood has a goal to intervene with those who are mentally ill to keep them out of jail or, when they are in jail, to help them get psychiatric treatment in a timely manner.

July 31 Meeting Notes

District Governor Visit

President Lisa introduced Assistant Governor Carol Adamson, who then introduced District Governor Sherry Chamberlain from the Kamloops West Rotary Club.  This is her 15th club visit, with 42 to go.  Sherry, who is only the second female DG in our district's history, talked about her personal story of why she joined Rotary.  She got involved in helping rescue girls from sex slavery in Thailand and Cambodia.  She has made 7 trips for CGT (Children of the Golden Triangle) projects.

DG Sherry talked about a Rotary club being like a home and family.  We need to be welcoming, give value and purpose to members, and be there for friendship and support.  In the area of membership, she stressed the importance of bringing guests.  She has a specially designed pin to present to anyone who sponsors a new member this year.  She presented one to Earl Crowe for sponsoring Ethan and Kaitlyn Vanweerdhuizen.

In the area of The Rotary Foundation, Sherry emphasized the "World's Greatest Meal to End Polio" which will happen worldwide on October 24.  Our club can participate with a dinner of our own, or join with other area clubs.  Hands-on projects are another important aspect of a Rotary club, and she suggested we do a Peace Garden with a Peace Pole.  The district will give our club $500 for a local project when we put up $500.  There are also public image grants we can apply for.

Sherry ended by encouraging us to tell our Rotary story, and then showed a video promoting the district conference in Kamloops next May 2-5.  Register (on the district web site) before the end of August to get a discount.

DG Sherry also presented a Paul Harris pin/certificate to Matt Eastman in recognition of the $1000 contribution to The Rotary Foundation.  It was also announced that Dave Freimuth has earned his Paul Harris +1 (total of $2000 in contributions).

Lisa thanked Sherry with a couple bottles of wine and a $50 donation to the Rotary Peace Centers in her name.




Jane Davis visited a new Rotary in Bali, and brought back their banner and a sarong with the Rotary logo on it.

Announcements:

Wayne, Jim & Carol, Tana, Robin, Taro, Jane , and John Mc. will all be working at the Watershed concert in the Gorge this weekend as a big fundraiser.  Two more concerts coming up this summer.

Backpack/school supplies giveaway will be Saturday from 8-12 at Columbia Elementary School in Wenatchee.  We have 7 members volunteering, and they can always use more help. our club also donated $1000 to the cause.

August 9th will be the all area social at Sunrise Circle with DG Sherry and her husband Jim.
