May 21 Meeting notes

Meeting was opened by President Craig who introduced guests Jon Clark (Jennifer's husband) and program speaker Luke Dixon.

Announcements

Jim gave a report on Rotary Park.  The representatives from the 3 Wenatchee clubs met to discuss several items, including what the city does for maintenance versus what the clubs responsibilities are.  We are mostly involved with any capital outlay costs (signage, new plants/trees, etc).  One topic was whether to change the many tiles on the flag plaza walls to four more big signs with all the tile information on them.  The committee has decided to replace the tiles on one wall per year (about $5000 per wall).  There is currently $16,000+ in the bank.  Another consideration is to replace the broken and outdated lights in the flag plaza.  The city may be able to do this if they can get it in next year's budget. Carl French has volunteered to be one of our club representatives on the Park committee.

Jim presented Kathleen with her Paul Harris +6 pin since she wasn't at last weeks meeting.

Kathleen gave a short training on our new database mobile app, "Ignite".  Try to install that on your mobile device so can get access to our members' contact info, calendar, TRF report, and more at the touch of your screen.

Laerke is going home July 19th, and will give another talk on June 25.  There is still time to take her out to coffee, lunch, dinner, or a weekend getaway.  Our outbound student (Pearl) will be back in July from Belgium.

Brags & Confessions

Wayne M celebrated his 31st anniversary in Penticton, BC with some Rotary friends.

Mansour is back from Arizona and an injured knee.

Emma and her fiance' went to Seattle an visited the zoo, Pike Place, and other attractions.

Alan's son and his wife came to celebrate his daughter-in-law's birthday.

Program

Alan introduced Luke Dixon of Eastside Rebuild.  This is a part of "Waste Loop" which helps turn local construction waste into sustainable resources in our area.

He described the construction waste industry - how waste is generated and where it goes.

He talked about solutions - deconstruction with recycling and reuse of materials, which can reduce landfill waste by 90-96%.

Luke described the benefits of deconstruction - environmental, affordable materials for housing, "green" jobs created, equity and education, and historic preservation.

He talked about the mission of Eastside Rebuild.  They have a facility to store salvaged material for resale, a tool library where people can rent tools for a small per year fee, and repair cafes where people can get help from volunteers to repair household items.  There are 58 volunteer who have logged over 400 hours of service.

Luke explained that we can help with financial donations, donating tools, or volunteering.

More information is available at their website:  www.eastsiderebuild.org, or you can email Luke at reuse@wasteloop.org.

After meeting notes

Jim's raffle ticket was drawn, and he opted for instant gratification, spinning $15 on the wheel.  There is $203 in the marble pot.

Letter from Pearl

Hi everyone!

In April I got to go to Greece with Rotary for ten days during the spring break. It was 10 out of our 12 inbounds here and it was the perfect sized group for a trip like that. I got to learn a lot of history (which I loved) and did a lot of sightseeing, but also tried a lot of new foods and drinks in the Greek cafes and hung out on the beaches of course. It was the perfect balance. It was really nice to be in the mountains again too. I also went to Amsterdam with my host family. It was just a day trip but it really left an impression. I thought it was such a beautiful and vibrant city. I also loved getting to see the famous Dutch tulip fields in bloom. Both were really memorable, beautiful experiences with great people. I also visited a really cool forest and the place where the Battle of Waterloo took place before I left for my big Greece trip. Since then, I've also seen some really cute villages and castles with my new host family and I went to the 72nd European Youth's Music Choir Festival/Competition. I went to the Brussels parliament and met the 'president' (-president isn't really a great translation of 'voorzitter' but there's not a better one I can think of- head or chair maybe) of the Parliament and some really well known Belgian politicians. And I've had a couple different city trips in Belgium with school which has been fun. It's been a full month and a fun one!

April 30 Meeting Notes

The meeting was opened by President Craig Reese. Our visitor today was Sally Feil, Dan’s wife.

Announcements

The presidential change over dinner is tentatively scheduled for June 25th. This may be at our morning meeting or may be a prelude to the Apple Socks baseball game that evening. Stay tuned for more information.

Laerke announced that she was having an easy week hanging out with friends before they all separated and headed back to their home countries. She helped sell Road Apple Roulette tickets this week.

Rebecca (far left) and Jennifer (bottom left) helped out at Rotary's sustainable waste stations in the park last week. The goal is to educate people about eliminating waste to the landfills by using recycling and composting. Thanks for serving in this.

Wayne M announced that we have 3420 raffle tickets sold so far. He sent a sheet around for people to sign up for the remaining selling opportunities, which include the All-Service Club Luncheon May 1st, the food court and beer garden, the Senior Center, and on the parade route Saturday morning.

Brags and confessions

Chris fined himself for forgetting the large foot pads for the food court to stand on while selling tickets. He also was interviewed by NCW Life Television and talked about our RAR raffle sales. He said that selling tickets in the beer garden was very easy.

Carol announced that she and Jim have sold over 1000 tickets so far. She also talked about the charcuterie boards that several of our members made at John Clark's Wood shop (Jennifer’s husband).  See photos at the end of this week's post.

Becky said that she was back from Paris and had a great time. She also helped sell tickets in the beer garden.

Wayne M bragged about Julie Banken's article in the paper on wasps. He said it was very helpful in dealing with them in his garden.

We officially welcomed
Dan Feil as a new member to the Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club. Dan is transferring from the East Wenatchee Club.  He started with the club in 1978 and has 46 years of perfect attendanceDan has served two terms as a Rotary Club President.  He has been an active member of the fundraising committee.  Dan also is a two-time Paul Harris recipient. Dan’s wife Sally was here today.  They have been married since 1986 and have 3 grown children.

Program

After Dan was inducted, he gave his classification talk. He talked briefly about his role in Rotary over the last 46 years. The two times that Dan was president of his club were notable in Rotary history. Ed Cadman from Wenatchee was Rotary International President in1985, and in 2005, Rotary International was celebrating its 100th year. Dan talked about all the changes that he's seen in Rotary over the year, and brought some old Rotary memorabilia to share.

Dan grew up in Leavenworth and East Wenatchee. His grandpa was involved in racing boats, which led to an outboard motorboat sales career. His dad started Bob Feil boats and motors which still exists on Sunset Ave. in East Wenatchee, right below Dan's house. Dan graduated from Eastmont High School in 1964, where he played a lot of sports. He went on to Washington State University and played intramurals, skied, and hunted in his spare time. Dan traveled to Europe for three months and then went back to school for a degree in economics. After that, he worked in the cherries and in the boat shop. The business expanded and included big Bayliner boats and camping equipment and trailers. They also owned 5 orchards, built a CA warehouse in Chelan, had property in East Wenatchee, and other real estate developments.

Dan enjoyed racing snowmobiles, has a 34-foot fishing boat in Alaska, three airplanes and two hangers (he learned to fly in a Chinese military plane) , collects classic cars for the classy chassis, and then tennis, Travel likes travel to Hawaii, Has a wood shop and even a sawmill in his backyard, plays tennis and works out at the gym. Dan was on the board for Miss Veedol and helped get the engine for the airplane. Dan said he's been in Rotary for so long he has lots of stories to tell. We'll save those for a later time.

After notes

There was $173 in the raffle pot. Wayne M won the draw and went for the big money, but he drew the wrong marble. Nobody seems to want instant gratification.
