Announcements

Tuesday, Feb. 5th, is the Rotarian Women Fellowship, at 5:30 pm, at Norwood Wine Bar, 23 S. Wenatchee Ave. If you are a Rotarian woman and an active member in any of the North Central Washington Rotary clubs, please join other Rotarian women for this informal , no-host event.

Saturday, Feb. 9th, is the Pre-PETS (President-Elect Training Seminar) in Ellensburg. 

Tuesday, Feb. 12th is the Bike Ride Committee's next meeting is , at 5:30 pm at Bob's Burgers and Brews in East Wenatchee. Anyone can attend this meeting.

Friday, Feb. 15 this the Wild Hockey game, where our club will have a suite.  $25 will get you in.  This is also a great time to bring family and/or potential members.  The Wenatchee Confluence Rotary Club members with be attending also. Contact John Schapman with the number that will be attending (john.schapman@cdhd.wa.gov). There are still tickets available.

February 15-18, Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) in Revelstoke, BC. Fun and sun in the wintery mountains of British Columbia. Welcome Wenatchee Sunrise Rotarians!

February 21-24, PETS (President-Elect Training Seminar) in Seattle.

April 12-13 is the Rotary Leadership Institute in Wenatchee.  The $170 fee will be reimbursed by our club.  This will include lunch and dinner Saturday, and breakfast Sunday.  RLI is a wonderful training for future leaders and new Rotarians.  The weekend is filled with interactive lessons on leadership, membership, PR, Rotary Foundation, and more.

May 2-5 is the District Conference in Kamloops, BC.  You can register online on the district web site (www.rotary5060.org).  The club will reimburse our members up to $150.  If you have never been to a district conference (or even if you have been to many), this will be a great one to attend.  It will change and expand your ideas about Rotary, and you will meet future friends from all over our district. Check to see who's going and possibly car pool.

Wayne Massing announced that the club's President and Board of Directors voted to contribute $500 to the Pangborn Memorial Airport's TSA agents during the recent government shutdown. Agents are able to accept monetary gifts up to $20 without violating any ethics or federal regulations. Twenty-five $20 shopping cards were purchased at Fred Meyer and taken to the airport for distribution. Wayne Massing met with TSA supervisor Agent Shaver and gave him the cards for the 22 agents at Pangborn. He thanked our club profusely, and said they would be sending a thank you card to the club!

Rebecca Lyons confessed to being late for being a greeter at this meeting. She has many clocks at home, but chose the slowest one to watch!

Program

Assistant Governor Carol Adamson did a speed classification talk with Mike Coleman! Three minutes for Mike to answer as many self-disclosing questions as possible. Some of his responses were:

What do you like about our Rotary Club?: a FUN Club!

Earl Crowe, Vice President, stood in for absent President Lisa Parks. He lead a discussion with club members in attendance regarding committees, and their status. It was a lively and informative discussion. During the committee discussion, these items were brought up:

Membership Committee - Jim Adamson reported that we have 49 members now. Seven left and two joined. The members in attendance agreed to acquiring quality members, rather that quantity of members. The Membership Committee is to meet on Thurs., Feb. 31st, 7 am at Bob's Classic (Wenatchee) to discuss membership, of course!

Senior Dinner by Jill Courtney - Always held on Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter, and this year is April 14th). Details are being worked out.

Challenge Scholarship Committee - Earl Crowe does the interviews. Erin McCool does the financials. Scholarship applications go out to Wenatchee, Eastmont, and West Side High Schools on April 2nd, and the applications are due back April 12th. David Barshes and Craig Reese have volunteered to be co-chairs of this committee.

Projects Committee - Ruth Dagg said the Habitat for Humanity group was looking for volunteers to help with the Home Show booth.  Just need to welcome people and be friendly.  See Ruth if interested. Also, there was discussion about possibly purchasing a Project Trailer that could be used by our Rotarians around the community for various projects, similar to the Chelan Rotary Club's Project Trailer. Good Rotary visibility within the community.  Contact Matt Eastman if you hear of ideas that might make good projects in our communities.

Fund Raising Committee - Earl Crowe said that our club had been asked again to sell parking places at the Town Toyota Center for the 4th of July firework event. John McDarment will be making some signs for the parking lots. Wayne Massing spoke about The Gorge volunteer efforts this year. Rob Tidd will be getting back to us about concerts where our club, Wenatchee Confluence and Wenatchee Rotary Clubs will be selling beer. We would like to get more club members trained for the MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Serving Training) cards prior to the start of the concerts and our volunteering..

We all have one thing in common (two, if you count the wine!). Hope to see you there. 

Kyle Vierck, Athletic Director, Wenatchee Valley College, announced the WVC Athletics Hall of Fame  and Follow Your Dreams Auction, Friday, February 1, 2019 at 5-7 pm at the Maguire Student Recreation Center, WVC Wenatchee Campus. Proceeds directly benefit Wenatchee Valley College student-athlete scholarships. Bid on fantastic sports memorabilia, unique travel trips (time share in Mexico and another at Lake Chelan), and one-of-a-kind items. Enjoy a silent and live auction and catered meal/drinks with your ticket to the event. Purchase a table for 8 at $500 or individual tickets at $75 each. Chris McDarment announced that he and his wife Holly (in attendance at the meeting) just celebrated 22 years of marriage!

Program

JOSEPH 101 - Our club's exchange student Joseph gave a presentation on his city,

school and family in Laon, France. Joseph introduced his family members. His father and mother are both in the insurance industry, and his father is a Past President of the Laon Rotary Club. Several of his brothers and sisters have been Rotary Exchange Students in the past. One brother provided a colorful, drone video of the historic city of Laon and its beautiful church. Joseph attends a private school, where he will be required to complete his senior year of high school after he returns from Wenatchee! His home is a large stone building that is older than the United States.

In his free time, Joseph enjoys Boy Scouts and playing tennis. When asked what the difference between Wenatchee High School and his private school, he said there are NO windows in WHS! His school had plenty of windows which he liked! His long range plans include becoming an engineer, visiting Vancouver, BC, and getting on the tennis team. His favorite class is calculus.

Joseph gave Lisa Parks, Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Club president, a banner from his father's Laon, France Rotary Club, and Lisa presented Joseph with a WSR club banner.

Next evening satellite club meets January 22, 5:30 at Ridge Cyclesport in Wenatchee (by Abbys Pizza).  Everyone is welcome.  Wine will be served.

Rebecca Lyons announced that daughter Mari took 1st place on the balance beam in a gymnastics tournament in California.  Awesome!
John McDarment said his son in Florida just made the list for the military rank of "major".
Carol Adamson's grandson who has been cancer free for a year and an half had a great check-up.  He will now be working with a neuro-psychologist to help with the lingering effects of the chemo.

Program

Milt Herman introduced Lateef Olaniyan and Dr. Michael Johnson from the Moses Lake Medical Team that has done work in Nigeria for the last 11 years.  Lateef, a pharmacist for 30 years, came to the US in 1981.  During one of his trips back to Nigeria, he was persuaded to bring medical people from the US to deliver aide to those who couldn't afford medical care.

Each year the medical team helps people with medical, vision, and dental problems.  Last year, in the 2-week period the team was there, they saw 33,000 patients, and did over 400 surgeries.  The team consisted of 32 medical and non-medical personnel (half from Moses Lake), along with hundreds of local providers in Nigeria.  Milt has been on all but one of the medical trips to help provide eye care.

After the club elections in December, it was announced that the following will be our Leadership Team for 2019-20, and will be starting their term July 1:

Wenatchee Rotary President Pete VanWell announced the upcoming auction to raise funds for their many projects, the main one being the construction of a BMX bike track at Lincoln Park.  The auction will be Saturday, January 26 at the Convention Center.  You are all invited.  Cost is $65 which includes dinner and wine.

Contact John Schpman immediately if you want to attend the Wild hockey game in a box seat section with fellow Rotarians.  Cost is $25.

Program

Erik Holmberg showed slides and talked about his trip to Dubai, UAE, Kenya, and Rwanda.  Here are the highlights:

• skiing in the mall in Dubai
• desert suburban ride in Dubai
• photo land cruiser safari in Kenya
• hot air balloon trek
• setting up solar panels and lights in a small village
• visiting a school our club contributes to
• guerrilla trek in Rwanda
• the people

Our club as given $2500 to help provide solar lights, and tuition for school.  Erik will be going back soon to take 250 portable solar lights (see picture on the left).
