September 27 Meeting Notes

The meeting was led today by President-elect Craig Reese.

We're sorry that we couldn't get out Zoom working today.  Hope these notes help.

Announcements

Woody relayed the message from our marketing committee that they need us all to fill out the short survey emailed out to our membership.  If you haven't done this, please do so asap.  The information is valuable for the committee as we go forward.

Brags and Confessions

Jackie saw two great shows at the PAC over the last two weekends.

Erik added his kudos for Woody in his PAC introductions.  He is also going to Turkey for a few weeks, and will play golf for 10 days there.

Kevin missed the bike ride because he was selling a boat, buying another boat, and spending a week in the San Juan Islands in the new boat.

Bill won two season passes to the museum while attending a show at the PAC.

Program

Norma Jean Diaz of Journey Travel, talked about the changes in the travel industry, and gave us some good tips.  She has been in the travel business for 24 years after working in the banking industry.  She specializes in group tours (Senior Center, etc).

Here are some of the changes:

• agents are now working from home, and can be more flexible and mobile;
• few travelers during COVID;
• mostly service packages (air/cruise/resort, etc.) instead of separate requests;
• now many more people wanting to travel again, creating backlogs;
• many book their own travel, but need to pay attention to details that seem to be ever-changing;
• COVID is still around, and people are catching it while traveling, sometimes leading to quarantines and missed trips;
• vaccinations are still required for some destinations, so it's important to know the requirements before you leave.

Some advice Norma Jean gave us included:

• always get good travel insurance (at least for out of country trips);
• move around in the airplane
• drink lots of water on the plane;
• wear support stockings

Norma Jean said that the advantage of using travel agents is that they can match peoples' needs with the right cruise line, land tours, custom itineraries, etc.  You can get extra perks and/or upgrades, and get helpful service if things go wrong on the trip.

There are some good travel videos Norma Jena has posted on You Tube.

She gave away a few door prizes (bags, wallets, mugs, etc) to some luck winners.  Ruth, Wayne M, Jackie, Bill, Dave, Marcy, and Taylor were winners.

Guest Drew's raffle ticket was picked, but not the right marble.  Pot will be around $90 next week.

• Training was held in Wenatchee on Sept 17th and 18th.

• Milt shared that $1500 was raised to help the Ukranian refugees in the area.

Jim Adamson

• Jim explained that the RLI training this weekend was a big success
• He enjoyed being a facilitator for the event
• The participants were very engaged, and the group had fun while learning about Rotary
• The Confluence Club had 10 attendees, so Sunrise needs to step up our game

• The training was excellent and well worth the time
• Jim Adamson and the facilitators were all very good speakers and really made the training enjoyable
• The participants were from all over the district, and it was very nice to meet the others and exchange ideas

• The November election is approaching quickly

• Woody had the honor of officiating a wedding this last weekend

• Robin promised to "rap" at the wedding (because she is dope and has a lot of street cred)
• They will be visiting opal mines and a very interesting prison with the other student

This classification talk was done a little differently.

Software was used to create a video covering Glenn's life and work experience.

This was done to demonstrate some ideas that may be of value to the club for marketing and other future events.

PROGRAM - STEVE WILENSON - Director - Wenatchee Valley Chamber of commerce

Steve and his wife are both from Washington State. 

• They were originally from Edmunds and Bellingham.
• They have 2 daughters and 3 granddaughters.

Steve's wife worked at Alcoa on the west side of Washington. When Alcoa closed, she was 5 years short of the 30 years necessary to receive company funded retirement.

His wife has two family members that are 104 and 106 years old. They decided that they should plan on a long retirement, so more funding was needed.

His wife found a job in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Steve's prior experience was in Commercial Banking and Economic Development.

He was approached to take on the role of managing South Central Kansas counties Economic Development. He inherited a staff and a culture that needed revamping.

Steve started with 14 counties and 24 employees. Over time, his responsibility grew to include 40 counties and his staff had grown to 46 employees. He also improved the culture and the moral in the office. His responsibilities included:

• Renovation of low-income housing
• Small Business Association (SBA) loans
• Grants to support county needs

Steve started with a five-year plan. After a couple of years, he and his wife got homesick for Washington State. His wife is crazy about fishing. Kansas is flat and irrigated and no match for WA when it comes to good fishing.

• She sometimes fishes alone but she is safe.
• She was one of the first women to join Airborne in the Army, so she is more than capable of taking care of herself.

His wife found a job at Chelan County PUD. Steve came out to look for a place to live.

He found the perfect land for a home at Roses Lake in Manson.

After they moved, Steve was approached by the Mayor of Chelan to manage a development of 45 homes being built on 9 acres.

In April of 2022, the former Director of the Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce left the position. The Mayor of East Wenatchee had heard good things about Steve and recruited him for the Director role.

His focus for the Chamber is how to help businesses in the Wenatchee area, including surrounding communities. (Chelan, Leavenworth, Cashmere)

He holds meetings with business leaders and owners to hear their concerns and challenges.

• What threats are they facing?
• What are their opportunities for growth?
• What support do they need most?

One of the major issues for businesses in our area is finding qualified applicants for entry level and mid-management professional positions. It is tough to both attract and retain strong team members.

• The cost of housing and the lack of a 4-year college in Wenatchee makes it hard to encourage people to come to the area or come back to the area after leaving town for school.
• These days most employees have their resumes on the Indeed job site. They are on the lookout for better opportunities, and they are heavily recruited.

HIs team is targeting businesses from 1 employee to 1000's of employees.

The Chamber of Commerce has an entire calendar of events to connect with the community. The goal is to have their finger on the pulse of the area and to share the feedback they receive with our elected officials.

There is one team assigned to understand and address the homeless population.

• This is a "Coffee and Commerce" panel

In 2013 the Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce was also assigned the responsibility for Tourism.

• The formal title is "Destination Marketing for Wenatchee".
• The goal was to expand the tourism season beyond the traditional Memorial Day to Labor Day window.
• The goal is to feature all of the activities available all year long.
• Wineries
• Skiing
• Etc.

The offices have been expanded to include a Wine Tasting room. It is part of the Wenatchee "First Friday" celebration each month.

The Chamber receives funds from lodging taxes to make grants available for area businesses. 

• There is an advisory committee that reviews submitted applications.
• The current strategy is looking for tourism-oriented plans for the funds.

• The event was a success. 
• It was a beautiful day in spite of the wind.
• Wayne's pool was popular. Kids swam. 
• I count Jim Adamson as a big kid! Ha, ha!
• Several people sat and talked with their feet in the pool.
• Wayne and his wife Karen were fantastic hosts. There was a great variety of food and drink available. Seating was comfortable and just right for the turnout.

• He is celebrating his birthday this week. 
• He will be traveling with his mother and brother to attend a memorial service. 
• He will be traveling to San Antonio for business in September. 
• He also was excited about Ichiro Susuki being inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame.

Wayne Massing

• The pool party at his home was a success, but it was windy.
• In 1958 he had 3 cousins that were adopted together.
• He recently was contacted by one of the cousins. He spent several hours talking to him. He and his cousin learned that they both worked at Boeing in the same building for 2 years.

Jackie Rector

• Jackie has a birthday coming up this week.
• She shared that she found Rotary 2 years ago when she met Kathleen McNalty at the Farmer's Market.
• She has had several substantial personal challenges in the past 2 years. She said that Rotary and its members have been there for her, and she feels that Sunrise Rotary has become like family.

• Kathleen has been enjoying her recent retirement by traveling since August 6th.
• She went to a Mariners game.
• She spent time with two family groups.
• She went to Sequim
• Then she most recently went to Lake Chelan

Robin DeRock

• Robin went camping with some girlfriends. They went paddle boarding and had a great time. Unfortunately, she took a fall and ended up aggravating her injuries from earlier this year.
• Her fall made working on remodeling her bathroom more difficult, but it is almost done.

He joined Sunrise Rotary after meeting Kathleen McNalty at Pybus. 

He mentioned that he knew that Rotary used to allow only one person per career in a club. He was pleased to learn that the guidelines have changed.

Post Retirement

• He is working on Cedar bird houses for family Christmas gifts

Family

• Married in 1973 - They will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next year
• Their daughter Summer was born in 1982
• Their daughter Heidi was born in 1985
• Their son Joel was born in 1990

Personal Life

Wayne was born in Butte, Montana, in 1951. He moved to Washinton State at 3 months old.

When he was 6, his family had issues that resulted in him living in a children's home for 3 months before he was adopted by his uncle and his wife.

Wayne learned Life Lesson #1 - always be grateful for the help you receive from others. "We all have choices and are free to choose the right path in our lives."

Wayne was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout. He achieved Life Scout ranking.

• Interesting note: Wayne was a charter member of the first co-ed Sea Scouts in Seattle. This occurred about the time that Wayne became interested in girls. (Coincidence? You decide!)

1963 - 1965 Wayne worked summers at his great uncle's ranch in Blue Creek, Washington, population 5, but it had a post office and a store. Blue Creek is north of Spokane.

Wayne went to school in the Seattle area. He was a good student, and he also played a number of instruments from grade school through graduation from Roosevelt High School in 1970 with honors. 

• He was a member of the marching band, stage band, and orchestra. 
• He was also a member of one of the first bands in Seattle with black and white band members. The name of the band was "Black and White".
