Meeting Notes October 9, 2018

Announcements:

• Next Sunrise Social will be October 10th (TONIGHT!) at 5:30 p.m. at Bob's Burgers and Brews.
• The Bring A Guest Winner for the last quarter was Jim Adamson. Bring a guest an enter to win a gift certificate!
• Want to learn Pickleball?  Of course you do- who doesn't??   It's the fastest growing sport in America (wow, I looked that up and it is actually true- who knew??) . Head to 255 N. Georgia Avenue, East Wenatchee, on Saturday October 13th from 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.  Bring a water bottle, comfortable clothing, court shoes and a folding chair (optional).
• This Thursday, Oct. 11th is the last Second Harvest of the year. Be at the Community Center on Chelan Street at 10:30 a.m.
• World Wide Polio Dinner is October 24th at the Wenatchee Valley Senior Center.  Fun prizes and great fellowship!  6:00.  Be there!
• Highway Clean-Up is October 27th from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.   Bring gloves, water, decent shoes, and dress for the weather.  We need at least 8 people.

• Earl Crowe was late because his daughter is now on Safety Patrol.   He is also looking forward to an upcoming hunting trip with Ethan.
• Kathleen McNalty celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary.
• Wayne Massing forgot to thank Ethan for his help at the Gorge.
• Eric McCool went to Virginia to visit her new nephew.  She is also helping a Rotary Scholar with his Medical School application.
• Taro Masuda is cheering on some Utah team I didn't catch the name of.
• Carol Adamson says "Go Cougs"

The Program today was a virtual trip to Armenia provided by David Barshes.  He has previously served in the Peace Corps in Armenia and now considers himself ABC (Armenian By Choice).

He gave a fun and interesting presentation about the country.

Meetings Notes October 2nd

Announcements:

• Next Rotary social is October 10th at 5:30.  Bob's Burgers and Brews in East Wenatchee!
• Joseph went to Portland and had a great time.
• Wayne announced a new Rotary Club called Wenatchee Now will be meeting on Wednesday's at 5:30.  More details to come.
• Jim A said that Second Harvest went great and thanked everyone who helped.
• There is a Board Meeting Monday morning, October 8th, 7:00 a.m. at Wild Huckleberry.  Everyone is welcome.
• The first Bike Ride Committee meeting is October 16th at 5:30 at Bob's Burgers and Brews in East Wenatchee.
• Kathleen asked that everyone look for an email regarding dues payment.  It may be in your spam folder.

• Ted Fukuzawa is a grandpa now!
• Bill said that he enjoyed working at the Def Leppard/Journey concert.
• Wayne and Karen went to Seattle an ran into old friends.
• Kevin was able to see his grandson take his first 4 steps!

Meeting Notes September 25th

Announcements:

• Rotarians of the past two months:  Ruth Dagg and Taro Masuda. Thanks for all you do!
  
  
  
  
• Rod Tidd reported that we are able to secure 8 booths for the Def Leppard Concert this weekend.  We should be able to make A TON of money!  
• Joseph Bernard, our French exchange student, has been traveling around a bit including Canada. He noted that Canadian French is significantly different than the French he speaks.
• Chris McDarment said that Brian is in Thailand having a great time.  He has been speaking quite a bit of Thai as well as taking a class in Chinese.
• Carol Adamson reminded everyone to Save the Date of Wednesday, October 24th for World Wide Polio Day.   The potluck dinner will be at the Wenatchee Valley Senior Center. at 6:00. Bring an hors d'oeuvres, your own soda, beer or wine and a $5.00 donation.   Lots of fun raffle prizes.  This is a World Wide Rotary event so be sure and be part of it!
• Jim Adamson thanked everyone who handed out food at Second Harvest and let everyone know that the last one is October 11th, 10:30-2:00, at the Community Center on Mission.  A few people are needed to make this happen.
  
• Last weekend, the Leavenworth Rotary hosted their annual Road Rally.   Our very own Sunrise Adamson/Massing team took first place.  They will be returning next year to defend their title.  A great time was had by all.

• The first Bike Ride meeting of the year is October 16th, 5:30, Bob's Burgers and Brews in East Wenatchee.  
• The District Fall Assembly is October 26 and 27 in Chelan.

Brags and Confessions:

• Rob Tidd attended the Zone Conference and had fantastic poutine.
• PJ attended his friend's memorial and said it was exactly what every memorial should be: A fire pit, BBQ, Beer and Stories!
• Robin DeRock also attended the Zone conference. On her travels back she came upon a tragic car accident but was able to be of assistance to the injured parties.  A small child was also involved and a child psychologist happened to be in the traffic jam. She said, although very said for the little boy to have lost his father in the accident, it was amazing how the perfect people were there at the perfect time.

Meeting Notes September 18, 2018

Announcements:

• Our next club social is on October 10th at 5:30 p.m. at Bob's Burgers and Brews in East Wenatchee.
• Josef reports that school is good and he had a nice time traveling a bit, including going to Yakima.
• Carol asked us all to save the date October 24th for World Wide Polio Meal Day.   There will be a dinner from 6:00-8:00 at the Senior Center
• Alan is the new chair of the Bike Ride committee.   Meetings will begin this month, the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at Bob's Burgers and Brews. The next one is October 16th.
• Leslie has four free tickets to the Altheia Riding Center gala.  Contact her if you want them.
• PJ has a Habitat for Humanity project on September 29th and October 6th.  Several people are needed to help out.  Contact Ruth Dagg if you are available.
• Penny, from Leavenworth Rotary, wanted everyone to know about the Annual Road Rally on September 22nd. Start time is 11:30 a.m.- meet in the Cascade Highschool Parking Lot.  Donation of $10.00 per car.  Driving/walking treasure hunt!

• Earl Crowe was accused of kidnapping his own kid from the parking lot after school one day.  He has since been cleared of all charges. (no charges, just confusion :)
• Alan Walker went on a road trip that included Arches, Vail and Jackson Hole.
• Carol Adamson says Go Cougs!
• Jim Adamson said that he went a long trip- 18 hours of travel to Prince George- for a 3 hour meeting.
• Wayne Massing said 6 people came to the pool party and that the DMB concert at the Gorge raised $2316.00.
• Mansour has a cruise coming up.
• Erik Holmberg was in Atlanta for a Husky game but it also happened to be the same weekend a DragonCon- a multiday event in which thousands of people dress up in crazy costumes.  He is also going to be headed to London for the Seahawks game.
• PJ lost a dear friend recently.  The friend had saved his life in 1968 by digging out from under and avalanche.
• Kaitlyn VanWeerdhuizen was pulled over for have a picture of an alligator taped to her license plate.  Turns out Ethan's co-workers did it as some joke.   Kaitlyn didn't find it funny.  However, the police officer asked to keep the pictures to show everyone at the station.
• Leslie Trebotich is headed to Utah.
• Penny from Leavenworth Club donated $20.00 because she felt the entertain at the Sunrise Rotary Meeting was worth it!

Announcements:

• The potluck at Utigard's will be on September 22nd.   Roast pork, turkey and beef will be provided.  Please bring a dish according to your last name:

• There is NO ROTARY MEETING September 12th! 
• The next food delivery is September 21st at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Apostles church in East Wenatchee.  We need several volunteers, contact Jim Adamson to sign up.
• A Habitat for Humanity project is coming- most likely the last Saturday of September, first Saturday of October.  Stay tuned for details.

• Erin McCool has a new nephew.  She and her husband celebrated an anniversary.  Also, she is celebrating the big 4-0 this month!
• Pete Blanksma celebrated his wedding anniversary.  He also helped move his daughter to Dallas which involved many, many hours of driving a u-haul
• Jim Richardson was pleased to announce that WVC has graduated the first class with a BA in Science and Nursing.
• Jill Courtney celebrated a birthday!
• Mansour Ravassipour has returned from Iran but his luggage did not.

Program

• The Program today was presented by Dr. Joey Walter and Brent Carter from WVC and discussed the Adult Basic Skills program.  More details can be found on the WVC website under Continuing Education.

The Sunrise Rotarians have been busy lately volunteering at Concerts and Open Houses.  Check out some photos:

First, last week Westside Highschool had a kick off and some Sunrisers agreed to help clean up.  Who knew clean up meant deflating bouncy houses?   Check out this video:

Also, we have participated in two concerts at the Gorge.  The first was Watershed and the second was the Dave Matthews Band concert.  We have one more coming up:  Def Leppard and Journey on September 29th.

Welcome Joseph

 Joseph Bernard, our youth exchange student from France, arrived at midnight on Wednesday, and was met by the Adamsons', and the Bankens' (his first host family).  After a looong day, he got a few hours sleep and headed to the San Juans with the Bankens'.  He'll be meeting with the school counselor on Tuesday to get his schedule and tour the high school.

Program

Our newest members, Ethan and Kaitlyn Vanweerhuizen, gave an entertaining classification talk today.  Kaitlyn was born in California, and also lived in OR, OH, and WA.  Her dream was to become a chef for the FBI, until she realized she had to actually know how to
cook.  She enjoys sports, and was a standout athlete in high school, participating in basketball, bowling (team went to State), and track, where she still hold the record for the discus (94 feet).  Kaitlyn graduated from WHS in 2015, and was married to Ethan in June of 2017.  She works at Jones & Jones/Betts Funeral Home as an admin assistant.

Ethan was born in Bellingham, and has lived his whole life (only 21 years) in Washington.  His dream was to be a linguist, until he realized he actually had to speak to people. After that he wanted to be a veterinarian.  He enjoys choir and drama, and participated in several musicals and plays in high school.  Ethan met Katilyn at Craft Warehouse where they both worked.  It didn't take long for the couple to get engaged, and then married.  Ethan is a customer service/sales rep for Haglund's Trophies.

Announcements

The TGIF at Wayne's has been cancelled due to the smoke.  Hope to reschedule.

August 28 - Our service project to help clean up Westside HS after their back to school bash.  We will start at 7:30.  Bring your family to help.

September 11 - no morning meeting.  Instead we are all invited to attend the all area meeting on Thursday, September 13 at noon at Pybus ($10/person for lunch).  A UW medical school doctor will speak on rural health and the shortage of doctors we are facing.

September 22 - Family picnic at Utigard's orchard.  More details to come.

October 26-27 - District Fall Assembly at Campbell's in Lake Chelan.  This is a training for all club officers, committee chairs, and all members who want to have fun, learn more about Rotary, meet with other Rotarians from our district (including the Canadians), and hear about what other clubs are doing to be vibrant, growing clubs.

May 2-5 - District Conference in Kamloops, BC.  Discount for early registration ends August 31.
