Wenatchee Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour

Today we met at the Wenatchee Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) at 7:00 am.  Since this was a long tour, we had no other meeting agenda.  Twenty of our members braved the cold and smell to learn about the important process of treating the city's wastewater.

WWTP Supervisor Mike Hodgson drove from Omak this morning to give us the tour.

Jennifer, as well as others, didn't enjoy the smell.

This is what the sludge looks like after it is removed from the wastewater. The product is dried into a "cake" and be applied to agricultural land as a soil conditioner, placed in landfills, or cleanly burned.

The initial waste comes in through pipes up to 48" in diameter.  The waste goes through a primary treatment (at right), then through a secondary treatment that removes 85-90 percent of the remaining pollutants (tank in photo below).   A final process takes the remaining liquid through an ultraviolet filter and then dumps the water into the Columbia.  The waste water at that point is cleaner than the river water.

Program - International Marketing Manager - Lindsey Huber

Rebecca Lyon's introduced Lindsey. Lindsey took over Rebecca's position at the WAC when Rebecca retired earlier this year.

Lindsey gave a fantastic and thorough presentation about the challenges facing the WAC and the industry as a whole.

[LINDSEY HUBER PROMOTED TO INTERNATIONAL MARKETING MANAGER BY THE WASHINGTON APPLE COMMISSION]
[WENATCHEE, WASHINGTON, APRIL 12, 2023]

The Washington Apple Commission has announced the promotion of Lindsey Huber to the position of International Marketing Manager. In this new capacity, Huber will be responsible for overseeing promotional marketing activities in over 25 countries on behalf of the 1,260 apple growers in Washington state.

Huber will be taking over the position responsibilities from Rebecca Lyons, who officially announced her retirement at the Washington Apple Commission Board of Directors Meeting in March. According to Lyons, “Lindsey has been an integral part of the WAC marketing team and has the knowledge and experience to take on the challenges and opportunities in the coming seasons.”

Since first joining the Washington Apple Commission in 2015, Huber has served as the International Marketing Specialist. Specifically, she handled the development of international promotions, worked on strategic planning, and assisted in the yearly federal grant application process that is used to help fund Washington apple international activities.  She commented, “We have a great team at WAC, both colleagues and our contractors in international markets, and we all share the same passion for promoting Washington apples to consumers around the world. I’ve learned so much in my time at the Washington Apple Commission, and I look forward to continuing to grow with the organization. I’m thrilled to step into the role of International Marketing Manager and am so excited to see what the future holds.”

Huber has worked in the produce industry for over 20 years including time spent in sales, marketing, purchasing, grower relations, and quality control. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Business with a minor in International Business and a Master’s in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing, both from Washington State University.

Meanwhile, Communications and Outreach Specialist, Jennie Strong, will be taking on the International Marketing Specialist role. Strong joined the Washington Apple Commission in July of 2022, new to the apple industry, but eager to catch up and earning a spot as a USApple NextGen Fellow for 2023. With a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Purdue University and a culinary background, Strong has a unique perspective she brings to the Washington Apple Commission team.

“The industry is more expansive than I ever thought. Learning the ropes and getting to know industry leaders and professionals has been amazing and eye-opening,” said Strong. “I feel very fortunate that I’ve had both Lindsey and Rebecca on my side, mentoring me, and I’m so excited to be a part of this next chapter at WAC.”

Pet Parade

Lots of people with their pets came to Pybus Saturday to enter their pet in the third annual pet parade.  The parade started at the Farmer's Market and ended at Firehouse Pet Shop (which was one of the sponsors along with our club) on Wenatchee Avenue.  Gift cards from Firehouse were given to winners in several categories, including cutest, best costume, biggest personality.  Our club members were assisted with members of the WHS Interact Club and the Pinnacles Prep Earlyact Club (the middle school version of Interact).

Polio Awareness Night

Thirteen of our Sunrise members and spouses joined the Wenatchee Downtown Rotary Club for a dinner at the Museum last Tuesday.  The purpose was to update everyone on the progress in eradicating polio, and to raise funds for the continued effort to finish off this global project which began almost 40 years ago.

Wenatchee Downtown Cleanup

Sunrise Rotarians had fun cleaning the downtown area, and visiting with business people and customers over several day in the month of October.  Thanks to all who participated, and to Kathleen for organizing this.  Our club made $2500 from a grant through the Downtown Association.

Polio Awareness Potluck - Tuesday October 24th @ 6pm
Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center

  • Almost 40 years ago, Rotary International took on its first global initiative to rid the world of Poliomyelitis. At the time, the wild polio virus crippled and killed more than 300,000 people each year, mostly children. Today, there have been three reported cases in Pakistan, one of the two countries where the disease still exists (neighboring Afghanistan being the other).
  • Rotarians and our global partners are closer than ever to our goal of ridding the world of wild Polio. Our efforts have saved millions of lives in the last three-plus decades and the hope is we can finish the job by the 40th Anniversary of The Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 2028. Help us realize a dream that stated in 1985 when Wenatchee Rotarian Dr. Edward Cadman ed Rotary International and launched PolioPlus.
  • The Rotary Clubs of North Central Washington and District 5060 have been at the forefront of this historic effort since the beginning, and we will be there to see it through until the end. Join us for a night of good food, fellowship, information and (of course) fundraising on World Polio Day, Tuesday October 24.

Exchange Student - Pearl

  • I thought since it’s the beginning of October I thought it would be good to send in my September Recap.
  • This month was so amazing and very busy. The first weekend of the month Kermis was in a town close to me, so my host family took me, and we went with the 2 other exchange students in that town and their host families. Kermis is basically a carnival that they pack up and move all around Belgium and it was fairly similar to an American carnival, but it was still very fun.
  • The next weekend was World Clean Up day, so I went with a group of other exchange students to a city called Genk and we picked up litter around a popular walking trail in the city. I think pictures of us made it to the Genk newspaper, but I’m not positive about that.
  • Then the next weekend I visited Antwerpen with all of the exchange students in my district. We got a tour of the old city and ate fries. It’s so incredible to be able to see all the history here. My favorite part was this old garden in the courtyard of one if the museums, it made me feel like I had just time traveled back to a Jane Austen novel.
  • The next day we had to drop off one of my host sisters at her college and I got to explore the town she lives in during the school year. The town is called Lueven and it was so cool. It had a very busy but cozy feel and like so many of the cities here, a lot of preserved history which was fun to learn about.
  • Last weekend, I went with my hosting Rotary club to Leidon in the Netherlands which was another amazing city where we met up with a Dutch Rotary club. We went to a museum which was essentially a tour of the inside of the human body which was very interesting, but I couldn’t take any pictures and another museum with a ton of Egyptian artifacts. I also got to just explore the city a bit and it was beautiful.
  • Outside of the weekends I’ve been going to Dutch lessons with a group of other Rotary and AFS exchange students twice a week which I always look forwards to and of course going to school which is also fun. It’s been a great month!

Me and two other exchange students asleep on our bus to Antwerp.

Another exchange student and me in Antwerp!

  • Cart's first job out of college was milking cows at the UC Davis Dairy. After Kirsten graduated, they moved to Hanford where Carl worked for a Pistachio/Almond/Walnut Processing plant, then as an Agricultural Inspector for Tulare County, and now as the Food Safety manager for Dayka & Hackett, a California based Produce producer, importer, and sales organization.
  • Carl's hobbies include Fishing, Golf, Sailing, Skiing, and arts and crafts time with his daughter.
  • Interesting facts: While living in Hanford, Carl and Kirsten raised show lambs (sheep) that they sold to 4H and FFA kids to show at the county fair. Carl was also a 4H leader in Kings County, CA for 10 years.

Program - Assistant District Governor - Mike Kintner

Craig Introduced Mike Kintner, who was standing in for the District Governor who could not attend the meeting.

Mike shared a number of interesting things about Rotary and District 5060.
  • Rotary has ~ 1.4mm members worldwide
  • Area 8 includes 7 clubs:
    • Lake Chelan
    • Leavenworth
    • Cashmere
    • East Wenatchee
    • Wenatchee Downtown
    • Wenatchee Sunrise
    • Wenatchee Confluence
  • Area 8 had 384 members and now has 410 members after the 2022-2023 year
Leadership learned that there are two reason's people join Rotary.
  • Fellowship
  • To make a difference
The goal is to listen to members to find the best way to meet these two objectives.

The 2 primary reasons that people leave Rotary are:
  • They don't feel connected to the people in the club.
  • They don't find the projects fulfilling.

The Sunrise Club Fundraising Committee is working on finding a new fundraiser to replace the bike ride.

The Cashmere Club is transitioning to a pickle ball tournament.

The Wenatchee Downtown Club is transitioning from an auction to a Toast and Roast.

The bottom line is that leadership is focusing on member experience.

Our district is made up of 57 clubs:
  • 50 Traditional clubs
  • 5 Roteract Clubs
  • 2 E-clubs (Chelan and Cologna)
The new District Governor Elect is Jill Leonard from the Wenatchee Downtown Club.

Kathleen McNalty is not only a key part of the Sunrise Club, she is also responsible for the public image of District 5060.

The district is working on transitioning applications like Club Runner to a new platform called DACDB, which stands for:
  • District
  • And
  • Club
  • Database
This transition will be slow and voluntary in the short term.

Area 8 which is made up of Zone 28 and 32.
  • District 5060 is #2 in the Area in terms of membership growth.
  • District 5060 is #13 in the world for growth.
  • Asia is leading the world in overall growth.
The Rotary impact on Polio is huge.
  • 400 million children per year are treated by volunteers.
  • Rotary has raised $1.9 billion since the start of the initiative.
  • Other entities have contributed $8 billion to assist in eradicating Polio.
  • This has not been easy and unfortunately has resulted in 78 volunteers dying during their service.

Contest
Mike shared that there is a contest underway to name a new gnome partner for Archie. The best name and story will earn 1000 Paul Harris credits.

Program - The Pangborn Memorial Airport Director - Trent Moyers

Trent Moyers

Trent Moyers works very hard for our regional airport. Trent was called upon by Maria Cantwell to represent small airport operators by testifying before the U.S. Senate Transportation Committee in Washington D.C.

Here is a link to the NCW Life story:
Pangborn chief addresses airport woes at U.S. Senate committee | News | ncwlife.com

Here is a link to Trent's testimony:
Trent Moyers, CDRPA Director of Airports - Commerce Committee Testimony on Vimeo

Trent is a family man with four children.

The airport has been in operation since 1941. Recently there have a number of substantial projects at the airport including:
  • A new apron that can handle 3 Boeing 737's
  • A new taxi area improvement to meet regulations regarding the height of the taxi area to the height of the runway
  • A new lighting system to increase the amount of light by 65% allowing flights to land safely with 1/2 mile visibility in the winter, cutting the distance in half
  • For a complete copy of the presentation, click here.
Trent explained how the taxes and fees on a ticket help pay for airport improvements:
  • Taxes on a ticket help pay for airport projects
  • Fees on a ticket fund the 10% match that the airport has to pay for projects funded by the government, who pays the other 90% for approved projects from a fund
Trent shared a lot of information in a very entertaining and informative way. He is clearly relaxed and experienced presenting ideas to groups of people. We are lucky to have him in charge of our airport. The future looks bright.
