October 18 Meeting

Program

We met at the Wenatchee Police station, where new police Chief Steve Crown and Capt. Edgar Reinfeld talked about the state of the police department, and gave us a tour of the facility.  The department has 38 officers (3 bilingual and 2 Latino) and 9 support staff.  The biggest challenge is staffing issues to cover all the preventative quality of life issues (gangs, youth violence, street drugs, the homeless, etc.).  Officers are trained for mental health and ethnic diversity issues.  They have prevention programs that include better training, outreach to younger kids, participation in community events, and school resource officers.  They discussed some of the new technology issues, which are costly (body cameras), but helpful (real time crime mapping).

The Boeing tour was rescheduled due to high winds in Everett last weekend, so you have another chance to sign up,  The new date is November 5.  Contact Wayne Massing.

The Challenge Scholars and mentors met at Abbys for pizza last Sunday.

We had our first monthly social at Pybus last Wednesday, and had a great time (scroll down to see pictures below).  Next one is scheduled for Wed., Nov. 9 at Columbia River Brewery.

Several of our members were on hand at WVC to talk to students about forming a Rotaract club last week (scroll down for pictures).

October 22 - Highway cleanup.  Meet at 8:00 am at the first Hydro Park in East Wenatchee.  Bring gloves and warm clothes.  Party at Abbys afterwards.
October 24 - Celebrate what Rotary has done with polio eradication at an area-wide Rotary potluck at the Wenatchee Museum.  Main dish will be provided, so just bring a side, salad, or dessert.  Bring family and/or guests.
October 28-29 - District Training Assembly in Osoyoos , BC.  This is especially good for officers and committee chairs.  Our club will reimburse the registration fee.  This is a great resort about 2.5 hours north (just across the Canadian Border so take your passport or enhanced driver's license). Rates in Canadian currency, which is a great deal for us.  Take your significant other and spend a couple nights.  Check it out and register here.

You won't want to miss the District Conference April 27-30.  Location is the beautiful Grand Okanagan Resort in Kelowna, BC.  Register (at least $100 deposit) by October 30 to have a chance for our club to win $1000 for a project of our choice.  Great speakers, and wonderful fellowship with Rotarians from all around our district.  Again, we get Canadian prices, and the club will reimburse the registration cost.  Check it out and register here.

Extra Curricular Activities

Several of our members spent time at WVC talking to students about joining a college Rotaract group.  We had several interested that signed up to get more information.  Jenny Rojanasthien helped organize this, and Wayne, Kathleen, Joanne, Carol and Jim A. volunteered at the table, with WVC President (and member) Jim Richardson making a guest appearance.

Wednesday night, about 20 folks showed up for a social at Pybus.  We enjoyed visiting with spouses and a couple people who are interested in join our club.  Pictured are 12 of the group.  Not to worry if you missed the fun - we will be having a PUB social the second Wednesday of each month.

Lisa Parks and Carol Adamson completed another Rotary Leadership Institute on Saturday in Yakima.  Our club has had several members complete the three-Saturday RLI course over the past three years.

Dick gave a Rotary Moment describing the history and significance of the Rotary Flag (you all know we have one, right?).
Lucas translated a postcard from 1919 written in French to Jim Huffman's grandfather from a girlfriend in France.

October 12 - We will have a Rotary booth at WVC club fair from 11:00-2:00 to attract potential Rotaract members.  Feel free to show up to help man the booth.
October 15 - Boeing Tour to Everett.  Kathleen bought the last two tickets and donated them to anyone who can go.  Thanks, Kathleen.

Wayne Massing's wife, Karen, is having knee issues.
Eric Holmberg finally got back from a three week trip to Dubai and several countries in Africa.  He went on a safari, and stayed in a village where they saw a system set up to give families light in their houses.  Mansouir Ravassipour and John MacDarment each donated money to fund these.
Renee Parkins is off to Las Vegas and Lake Havasu for a wedding (not hers).
Carol and Jim Adamson's son and grandsons (ages 10 & 12) ran their first half marathon in Spokane.
Jerry Karney announced the "Breath of Air" concert at Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church October 15 at 6:00.  All proceeds go to the Lighthouse Ministry.
Patty Rush's granddaughter, (2013 Apple Blossom Queen) got the lead part in White Christmas, which will be in Seattle around Thanksgiving.

Program

George Wilson, retired Secret Service, discussed the history of the SS, and shared some stories of his duties on the US presidential detail.  He started in 1969 with Nixon, and continued with 6  more presidents, through Clinton's second term.  He began his career in Chicago, then was based in Seattle until he retired in 1997 to Lake Wenatchee.

October 4th Meeting

Announcements:

Rotaract is starting a club with all new members.  On October 12th, there is an event at Wenatchee Valley College and we will be needing some Rotarians to help staff the booth.   Contact J-Roj to help out!

Youth Exchange Orientation is at the High School on Thursday from 6:30-8:00.  If you know someone interested in being and Outbound exchange student, this is the meeting to attend. Contact Maggie for details.

There are still spaces available for the Boeing Tour- get signed up this week!  October 15th- $70.00 per person.

October 18th Meeting will be at the Wenatchee Police Department!

October 25th Meeting is cancelled!  Instead, we will be having a fellowship on October 24th at the Wenatchee Valley Museum.  All the local Rotary groups will be there to celebrate World Polio Day.
Bring a salad, side dish or dessert.

On October 16th there is a Challenge Scholarship Pizza Party from 1:30-3:30.

SAVE THE DATE!  October 22nd is Make a Difference Day and we will be needing several Sunrise Rotarians to help pick up litter on a 2 mile stretch of Highway east of town by the Hydropark.  Many hands make light and fast work so sign up!

The District Assembly is October 28th.

The Rotary International Conference is April 27th.  Sign up now and our club could win $1000.00 towards a project!

Classification Talks:

Jill:

Jill's grandparents homesteaded near Rock Island in 1903 and raised dryland wheat.  They increased their acreage to 1200 acres by 1925.  In 1926 her grandfather was killed in a car accident and the farm was left to the grandmother and the boys to take care of.  Unfortunately, in the great depression all the land was lost and the family moved into town.

Jill's mom graduated from Wenatchee Valley Highschool in 1939 and the next year, in 1940, met her dad who had just moved from Missouri.  They were married in 1941, one week before Pearl Harbor.

Jill's dad was drafted in 1943 along with his brothers and all came back safely.

When Jill was born, the family lived on 5-10 acres out a Rock Island.  She was the 3rd of 4 kids.   When she was 6 months old, the family moved into town but after 4 years, her mom really wanted to be back on a farm and the family bought 320 acres out in Malaga.

Jill went to the Malaga school with just a few other students.  

Later, Jill joined the Applachee drill team and went to Jr. College.  While in Jr. College, she worked part time at GTE.  After Jr. College, she went to CWU for three months but was homesick (and in love with a boy...) so she moved home and got her old job back at GTE and then worked her way up the ranks to Sales person and then eventually to trainer.  From GTE, she eventually went to Interwest and just left there 4 years ago.  After her time at Interwest, she started working in the business office at Confluence health where she works today.

Her and her husband have one daughter, Tanya.  Tanya has two kids- a boy and a girl.

Renee:

Renee grew up in the Wenatchee Valley doing a variety of jobs until she finally moved to Ellensburg and got a job as a legal assistant.  Even though it was a great job, it wasn't for her and she knew she wanted to get into event planning.

She was determined to go to WSU and finally ended up there. She is the first person in her family to attend college!

Although she graduated in 2008- the worst time to get a job coming out of college- she managed to land a great gig as the event planner for the Business Center at WSU.  She eventually became a full time recruiter.

After awhile, she decided to move to Spokane where she worked for the MDA association but she found the work heartbreaking decided to move back home to Wenatchee.  Since moving back to Wenatchee, she has been the Social Media Diva for Orchard Corset and now works for Firefly doing marketing.  

She loves motorcycles, karaoke, wine tasting and hiking.  She is a crazy cat lady in training with a total of 2 cats who have determined no more cats are allowed in her house!

September 27th Meeting

Announcements:

Lucas says that all is going well with school and friends and he is excited to go to Homecoming.

Joan says all the Challenge Scholarship recipients are doing well.

Save the date for and October 24th - Rotary Potluck at the museum celebrating International Polio Eradication day with the other Wenatchee area clubs.  This will be a time of fun, education, and celebration focused on Rotary's efforts to end polio world-wide.  No morning meeting Tuesday, Oct. 25.

October 28th is the fall District Training Assembly in Osoyoos, BC.  This is for any Rotarian, but especially designed for officers, board members, and committee chairs.  Our club will reimburse the registration fee.

We can win $1000.00 for our favorite club project if we have the most members (per capita) registered for the District Conference by the end of October.  The conference is April 28-30 in Kelowna, BC.  Register online at www.rotary5060.org. - more details from Carol coming later.

Salmon Recovery In the Upper Columbia River

Barb Carrillo (right), Education Outreach Coordinator for the Salmon Recovery Board, discussed the purpose of the Salmon Recovery Board.  The goal is to increase spawning salmon in the Columbia River, and restore the population of salmon.  Two Native American tribes and three counties are involved.  The effort creates 1600 jobs and brings in $245 million in local economic activity.  Barb, and Executive Director Melody Kreimes (left), talked about the treats to salmon recovery (fire, sea lions, etc), and what they are doing to improve habitats, spawning grounds, resting areas, and removal of barriers.  Check out more at www.ucsrb.org.
