January 24, 2023 Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order at 7 am by President Robin DeRock.

Rob Tidd - Working at the concession stand at the Wenatchee Wild Game

The Confluence Club raises as much as $2500 per night when they provide the entire staff for a single concession stand
Robin worked and raised $304 for our club
Jackie worked a different night and raised $100 for our club

Back from a trip to Kauai and an enjoyable vacation

He has now practiced law for 49 years

Jim and Carol both recently celebrated birthdays
Thier ages are apparently classified

Kelly and Alan also just returned from a trip to Kauai
They were able to avoid Jim and Carol the whole time!

She has a grandson that just turned 1 year old

Robin recently received a cortisone shot that had a severe reaction
Her blood pressure jumped to extremely high levels (220+/110+) that could have caused a stroke. Thankfully she avoided severe results

Program - Major Morris Hahn, Commanding Officer of the Pangborn Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol

Tom Green was also in attendance (a former County Commissioner)

Major Hahn spent 8 years in the Marine Corps, He then spent 28 years in the San Diego Police Department. He then worked as private security for 10 years.

Major Hahn spent 3 years as the Squadron Commander in the CAP. He was moved to the role of Major and Commanding Officer. He is responsible for 26 squadrons in Washinton.

The Civil Air Patrol has 60,000 members across the U.S. in 52 wings. There are members in Japan and Germany.

Members can join from 12 years old to 18 years old. They can stay until they are 20 years old. Some of the members come from Junior ROTC High School programs. There were 124 new members in 2022 in Washington State.

The Ephrata group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month. They also host the Flight Academy for the 26 squadrons.

The members and leadership of the Civil Air Patrol are not paid for their service. The leadership is made up of people like Major Hahn and Mr. Green, who have diverse leadership experience in several areas of expertise.

Note: The Civil Air Patrol was the group that provided the flag ceremony for the Rotary Conference at the Wenatchee convention center.

The Civil Air Patrol was founded December 1st, 1941. This made them a separate organization from the former Army Air Corps.

The responsibilities were to:

Hunt for submarines
Transport targets for war games - This assignment cost the lives of 27 people from friendly fire.

The CAP is a non-profit organization. Their funding mostly comes from their Wreaths Across America combined with community contributions. The U.S, Air Force provides the fuel for the airplanes in the CAP.

There 50-60 pilots in Washington State. The planes in our area are based in Ephata, Moses Lake, and Yakima.

Some of the projects in Aerospace include:

Education on ground systems
Flying

5 powered flights

These include being scramble exercise targets for F15 fighters.
They also flights as DEA spotters looking for drug farms in some states.

5 Glider flights

High Altitude Balloons

The members may go on to become fighter pilots in the military.

The Cadets are given exposure to Aerospace (Cyberspace), Leadership, and Emergency Services Training. They attend a 1-week boot camp during the summer, Other activities include color guard duties, and attendance at Pangborn events.

Milt did not win the raffle this week. $254 dollars and growing!

Program - Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority

Richard DeRock, a board member for the Port Authority, introduced Ron Cridlebaugh

The Port Authority leads the charge for industrial development. They partner with all other agencies to identify opportunities to create an attractive area for businesses to consider for their business.

The projects include new data centers in both Chelan and Douglas counties for Microsoft, and many substantial projects for Pangborn Airport.

The Microsoft projects include improvements to infrastructure for water and power being brought into the area from other locations outside our area to preserve our power capacity for our cities and residents.

The plans include 6 buildings in Chelan County and 6 more in Douglas County
If all potential data centers are installed, the revenue for each county could be as much as $3 billion in each county. There will be as many as 300 jobs to support all 12 buildings.
The Malaga water system will be enhanced by Microsoft to meet their needs. It will include a water treatment plant even though the water is technically potable coming from their facilities.

There are several projects planned for the airport.

New landing lights to allow planes to more safely land in poor visibility by reducing the needed distance from 1 mile to 1/2 of a mile.
New concrete pad to replace the failing asphalt pad currently in place.

The new pad will accommodate 3 Boeing 737 sized planes. This will allow for larger carriers to support Pangborn customers.

Air National Guard - They will be moving from Moses Lake to Pangborn in 2023.

There will 50 employees
There will several helicopters that will be located at the airport.
They will be able to better support tanker planes to address our fire season with reduced travel time for refill of retardant and fuel.
The Guard will have a permanent location by adding to total size of the airport. Farmland on the south side of the airport has been identified and development of the property will be completed by a local contractor.

Corporate Planes

The old building will have a $5.5 million makeover as reception area for corporate travelers.
New plane storage for corporate planes will be replace current private plane storage. Private plane storage will be addressed in a separate project.

Runway upgrade

A complete repair and remodel of the existing main runway
This project will be substantial and will be 90% funded by federal grants.

Other information

Richard DeRock shared that they are working on getting a second Alaska flight back. They are also looking to add a new carrier for direct flights to airports other than Seattle. The toughest part is that the airlines are struggling to find enough pilots.
