The annual report for the PAC runs from 8/1 to 7/31

The past year 71 events (56 at the PAC) put on by a staff of 6 people
This year has already seen 62 events
Ryan Stiles from Whose Line Is It Anyway will be coming to Wenatchee

Program - Michelle Sadewasser, Transition Coordinator, Special Education

Michelle is the leader of the first Project Search program in the Wenatchee Valley.

82% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities do not have a paid job in their communities.

Project Search was established to help young people with disabilities gain the skills they need to get meaningful jobs. There are 732 sites in 10 countries and 48 US states. They have served 38,641 people since 2010.

The project measures success by making sure that 100% of Project Search Graduates get paying jobs for 16+ hours/week.

Stemilt has established the program in their Wenatchee location. Click here to read about their role in the program.

Here is a flyer to provide an overview of the program at Stemilt.

There are 7 interns in the Stemilt program. (There were 8 but one already has a job.) The interns are treated like employees.

Here is Robin with intern Emily Hemsley. She is currently part of the Stemilt project. She presented her schedule.

They get on Link Transit in the morning to be at Stemilt in time to clock in and begin their day.

Emily is part of Special Olympics. She loves Basketball, Swimming, Softball, Bowling, and she will be participating in the Wenatchee Polar Plunge on March 3rd.

The Stemilt Project established a Business Advisory Council to oversee the program. Here are the guidelines for anyone interested in establishing a project in their business.

Michelle and the rest of the team is planning for the Stemilt Project to be the first of many in the Wenatchee area.

Program - Marriah Thornock, Executive Director, Wenatchee Valley Museum

Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center - Website

Marriah Thornock is a member of the Wenatchee Rotary Club (Downtown).

Marriah has been at the museum for 10 years.

The museum was established in 1939. The museum is two buildings. Each building was the Wenatchee Post Office in the past. The smaller building on the corner of Mission and Yakima was first. When the Post Office moved again, the museum took over the larger building next door.

The museum has over 40,000 square feet.

There are many items in the museum's inventory from the Wenatchee area. Here are a few:

Wenatchee's first Fire Truck
1929 Wenatchee Rotary Float
Baseballs from the Wenatchee Chiefs team from 1937 to 1941
Miss Veedal's last remaining original plane part

A prop was damaged on the trip from Japan to Wenatchee
It was replaced but the plane was later lost on a flight across the Atlantic

There are several events every year. They include:

3,000 sq/ft of traveling exhibits
Regional High School Art Show - (This year 3/23/2023)
Cultural Events including the Day of the Dead
An annual Salmon feed working with the Wenatchee Tribe which has 10,000 or more attendees

Community Education is a priority.

100,000 Adults and children participated before Covid
30,000 participated last year and growing now

Children are a real focus moving forward. The museum invited a cross-section of experts and parents to help identify the needs for the new and improved child targeted experience.

Safer play space (stairs needed replaced)

A Rotary District Grant helped the museum improve the Coyote Corner children's area.

The annual budget for the museum is between $900,000 to $1mm. There are 15 staff members.

Revenue comes from donations, community support groups like Rotary, and memberships.

She has a grandson that just turned 1 year old

Robin recently received a cortisone shot that had a severe reaction
Her blood pressure jumped to extremely high levels (220+/110+) that could have caused a stroke. Thankfully she avoided severe results

Program - Major Morris Hahn, Commanding Officer of the Pangborn Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol

Tom Green was also in attendance (a former County Commissioner)

Major Hahn spent 8 years in the Marine Corps, He then spent 28 years in the San Diego Police Department. He then worked as private security for 10 years.

Major Hahn spent 3 years as the Squadron Commander in the CAP. He was moved to the role of Major and Commanding Officer. He is responsible for 26 squadrons in Washinton.

The Civil Air Patrol has 60,000 members across the U.S. in 52 wings. There are members in Japan and Germany.

Members can join from 12 years old to 18 years old. They can stay until they are 20 years old. Some of the members come from Junior ROTC High School programs. There were 124 new members in 2022 in Washington State.

The Ephrata group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month. They also host the Flight Academy for the 26 squadrons.

The members and leadership of the Civil Air Patrol are not paid for their service. The leadership is made up of people like Major Hahn and Mr. Green, who have diverse leadership experience in several areas of expertise.

Note: The Civil Air Patrol was the group that provided the flag ceremony for the Rotary Conference at the Wenatchee convention center.

The Civil Air Patrol was founded December 1st, 1941. This made them a separate organization from the former Army Air Corps.

The responsibilities were to:

Hunt for submarines
Transport targets for war games - This assignment cost the lives of 27 people from friendly fire.

The CAP is a non-profit organization. Their funding mostly comes from their Wreaths Across America combined with community contributions. The U.S, Air Force provides the fuel for the airplanes in the CAP.

There 50-60 pilots in Washington State. The planes in our area are based in Ephata, Moses Lake, and Yakima.

Some of the projects in Aerospace include:

Education on ground systems
Flying

5 powered flights

These include being scramble exercise targets for F15 fighters.
They also flights as DEA spotters looking for drug farms in some states.

5 Glider flights

High Altitude Balloons

The members may go on to become fighter pilots in the military.

The Cadets are given exposure to Aerospace (Cyberspace), Leadership, and Emergency Services Training. They attend a 1-week boot camp during the summer, Other activities include color guard duties, and attendance at Pangborn events.

Program - Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority

Richard DeRock, a board member for the Port Authority, introduced Ron Cridlebaugh

The Port Authority leads the charge for industrial development. They partner with all other agencies to identify opportunities to create an attractive area for businesses to consider for their business.

The projects include new data centers in both Chelan and Douglas counties for Microsoft, and many substantial projects for Pangborn Airport.

The Microsoft projects include improvements to infrastructure for water and power being brought into the area from other locations outside our area to preserve our power capacity for our cities and residents.

The plans include 6 buildings in Chelan County and 6 more in Douglas County
If all potential data centers are installed, the revenue for each county could be as much as $3 billion in each county. There will be as many as 300 jobs to support all 12 buildings.
The Malaga water system will be enhanced by Microsoft to meet their needs. It will include a water treatment plant even though the water is technically potable coming from their facilities.

There are several projects planned for the airport.

New landing lights to allow planes to more safely land in poor visibility by reducing the needed distance from 1 mile to 1/2 of a mile.
New concrete pad to replace the failing asphalt pad currently in place.

The new pad will accommodate 3 Boeing 737 sized planes. This will allow for larger carriers to support Pangborn customers.

Air National Guard - They will be moving from Moses Lake to Pangborn in 2023.

There will 50 employees
There will several helicopters that will be located at the airport.
They will be able to better support tanker planes to address our fire season with reduced travel time for refill of retardant and fuel.
The Guard will have a permanent location by adding to total size of the airport. Farmland on the south side of the airport has been identified and development of the property will be completed by a local contractor.

Corporate Planes

The old building will have a $5.5 million makeover as reception area for corporate travelers.
New plane storage for corporate planes will be replace current private plane storage. Private plane storage will be addressed in a separate project.

Runway upgrade

A complete repair and remodel of the existing main runway
This project will be substantial and will be 90% funded by federal grants.

Other information

Richard DeRock shared that they are working on getting a second Alaska flight back. They are also looking to add a new carrier for direct flights to airports other than Seattle. The toughest part is that the airlines are struggling to find enough pilots.

Program: Laura Gloria - Executive Services Director, City of Wenatchee

Laura formerly served as the Deputy City Manager for the City of Fresno, the fifth largest City in California with a population of over 500,000. She led a variety of projects and programs including applying, receiving, and administrating a $66.5 million Transformative Climate Communities grant.

Laura joined the City of Wenatchee in 2020 (just in time for Covid) but she has been very busy.

Laura presented a number of projects planned for Wenatchee over the next 1 to 10 years.

$10 Million Convention Center Expansion - Architects are close to presenting preliminary specifications for the planned expansion.

January 3, 2023 Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order at 7 am by President Robin DeRock.

(Chocolate covered with cherries with coconut is even better!)

Invocation

Jim Adamson opened the first meeting of January 2023 with an invocation.

Announcements

Alan Walker, Bike Ride Committee chair, announced that there would be a meeting later in January to discuss the 2023 Bike Ride.

Earl Crowe, Finance Committee chair, announced that the finance report would be delayed.

President Robin brought up a possible club income source at the concession stands at the Town Toyota Center. MAST and food server cards might be required. More to come on this subject.

Next week's meeting will be in the board meeting room at Pybus.

Dues statements are going out. Remember the optional $50 donation to the Rotary Foundation, which will be matched by our club. "Every Rotarian, every year!" That optional donation will be on your dues statement.

Brags and Confessions

Robin also bragged about getting a cocktail maker for Christmas. Her former hockey "kid" got a "hat trick"!

Alan Walker bragged about snow shoeing near Leavenworth, and about the Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council receiving a large grant to use in our counties.

Jim bragged about their Hawaiian vacation in the sun and sand.

Program

Dr. Soon Li Teh, Tree Fruit Research and Extension, was the featured speaker. He spoke about the second largest tree fruit in our area - pears.

Pears have been in existence for over 5,000 years, and originated in three different areas: NW China, Asia and between the Black and Caspian Seas.

The three main groups of Pyrus (pear) species are the Sand Pear, the Chinese White Pear and the European Pear. Pears have been used in cooking for tenderizing meats.
