Public Awareness

Here is a great example how Rotary's public image can be expanded.  This painting in downtown Spokane can easily be seen by thousands of people everyday who visit the downtown area.  Next year, our district will be offering PR grants for clubs.  Maybe the Wenatchee clubs can get together and come up with a great way to share Rotary in our community (Link bus signage, cinema advertisement, painted sign on downtown building, etc.).

Visit to Wenatchee Valley College

Dr. Jim Richardson, Wenatchee Valley College President and Sunrise member, hosted our club for breakfast at WVC and gave us a great tour of the new Fine & Performing Arts Building.  The building, originally designed at $4M ($2M of that from the state), was completed for $9.6M, thanks to funds from the WVC Foundation, a match from the Icicle Fund, and many personal donations.  This allowed a better state-of-the-art building that got just about everything the fine art and music people wanted.  The arts building features art studios that have high tech computerization, white board walls, and are designed for optimum lighting and utilization of space.  The music wing consists of an acoustically designed recital hall, sound-proof practice rooms, a computer music composition room, a recording studio, and a practice room for bands and choirs.  This was a community effort that has produced a world class facility.

2015 Challenge Scholars

Emily, Maria, Alex, Zayra and Josh

We welcomed five of our scholarship winners and their families.  Josh Nerland a Senior at Eastmont wants to earn a degree in nanotechnology.   Zayra Calvillo Garcia is a sophomore at Wenatchee High School and wants to be lawyer and a chef.  Alex Rodriguez Pantaleon is a Junior at WHS and wants to be a family physician.  Maria (Lupita) Torres is a sophomore at WHS and wants to be a lawyer specializing in immigration and domestic violence issues.  Emily Castorena is Junior at WHS and plans to be a biology major and a pediatrician.

May 5 Announcements

• Carol thanked members for attending the All Service Club lunch last week (right).
• There are several ways you can contribute to the Nepal disaster relief.  Our Rotary is likely to support the Shelter Box program which provides giant tents and supplies.  Contact Carol if you would like to make a personal donation.
• 227 are registered for the bike ride!
• Don't forget: next week we are at the Wenatchee Valley College for our meeting.  Enter off 9th by turning onto Nelson.  Park behind Wells House.  Bring $3.50 for cost of breakfast. We will have a tour of the new music and arts center.  
• We needs weeders for our garden this weekend.  We are plot #20.  Help out if you can.

Wenatchee Valley College Honored

WVC is celebrating their 75th anniversary, and the school was honored by being chosen as Grand Marshal.  College students played a big part in designing and constructing the Apple Blossom float.  Sunrise member, and WVC President, Jim Richardson (left) represented the college in the parade.
