November 26 meeting notes

Announcements

Christmas party Dec. 18.  Site to be determined, but put it on your calendar.  Family and friends invited.

Thanks to John Schapman for hauling an old freezer to the Dryden transfer station for a family.

We still need half of you to fill out the club survey sent out a couple weeks ago through Survey Monkey.  The information is not very useful if all of you don't give us your feedback.  Please do this asap.  Contact Rebecca Lyons, John Schapman, or Jim Adamson if you don't have the survey link any longer and we will resend it.  Thanks.

Adele is ready to start skiing, and heads for Silver Star in Vernon, BC, December 6.

Brags and Confessions

Chris McDarment went to see his son play water polo at CWU.
PJ Jones bragged about Montana State and Utah football victories.
Erik Holmberg was disappointed enough not to renew his UW season tickets, but was glad Oregon got beat.  Apple Cup this Friday afternoon.  GO COUGS! (editors note).
Kathy Hamilton also gave a buck for the COUGS (all the other WSU fans were fined - again).
Robin Derock's hockey team (Blackhawks) have now lost 3 in a  row.  She also said that next Wednesday is her last day of work (paid anyway).  She also mentioned that the Confluence club now has 89 members, and inducted the last two at a meeting at her home.  She encouraged us to get with it and bring in some great new members.
Wayne Massing and his wife are back from a trip to Portland.

Program

Mary Gilmore and George Templeton were here today to tell us about the Life Flight Network.  This helicopter and fixed-wing ambulance company has been serving for 41 years.  They have 28 bases in WA, OR, ID, and MT. They are the largest non-profit service of this type in the US, and are owned by four PNW and Inter-mountain hospitals.  Each flight has a team of 2 critical care professionals.  They average about 10 flights out of Wenatchee each month, although the closet bases are in Brewster and Moses Lake.  Life Flight offers memberships that will cover the cost for a person and their family.

Brags and Confessions

Jim Huffman attempted another Chuck Norris joke, but his comedy met with mixed response.

Jim and Carol Adamson returned from 2 weeks on the island of Maui. Their broad smiles were only out-shadowed by their dark tans!

Robin DeRock cheered her hockey team on for their 4th win. She is also looking to get hired! Contact her if you have a job (509-741-9079).

Chris McDarment missed last week's meeting because of an even bigger meeting hosted by his employer, Chelan Public Utility District.

Erik Holmberg saw "Matilda, the Musical", and his niece was one of the star singers. Eric also told of flying to Las Vegas with his wife Kristen for the Lady Gaga concert and to celebrate his 29th anniversary. The airplane seating was not spacious!

Sargent at Arms

Eric Holmberg fined PJ Jones for taking off for 4 months. He also fined all those seated at tables without any women, and all tables where there weren't any men! A pin check yielded very little in fines. Robin DeRock was fined for her language on Facebook after a recent shopping trip to a local grocery store.

Program

Craig Reese introduced the program, The Rotary Foundation (TRF), and stated that November is Foundation Month.
Jim Adamson assisted Craig in covering the founding of TRF by Archie Klump, and that it was started with only $26.50. The Foundation is one of the top rated charitable organizations in the world. TRF is comprised of the Annual Fund and the Permanent Fund.
John McDarment described some of the local Rotary projects that were funded with District 5060 grant money, or from local grants. Rotary Park, Centennial Park, and NW Harvest are just some of the projects funded with grant money.

Paul Harris Fellow Award
President Taro Masuda and Foundation Chair Craig Reese presented Kathleen McNalty with her first Paul Harris Fellow Award for having contributed at least $1000 in the last year to The Rotary Foundation.

Board Meeting Minutes

John Schapman, club secretary, disclosed to the club the minutes of yesterday's board meeeting (Nov. 11, 2019). The following items were in the minutes:
     - The Board approved changes to the Challenge Scholarship Program
     - The Board approved $3000 for the Sister Connection, an African project headed up by Craig Reese
     - The Board discussed the funding received from "The World's Greatest Dinner to End Polio".
     - The Board approved $250 for the Museum Family Fun Day.
    - John reminded the club that elections were coming up by the end of December. If you are interested in a position on the Board, or in club leadership, contact club treasurer John Schapman (jt.schapman@gmail.com) or 509-222-0270 mobile.

Brags and Confessions

Mansour Ravassipour said this was his last meeting until next Spring. He and wife Linda are headed for sunny, warm Arizona!

Wayne Massing and his wife spent 5 hours in the Confluence Emergency Room with his mother-in-law, who had an excessively high blood pressure. She was briefly admitted to the hospital, but was home on Sunday afternoon with a lower blood pressure.

Sargent at Arms

Everyone's dollars were safe. We had NO Sargent at Arms present!

Program

Alan Walker, chairman of the Challenge Scholarship Bike Ride Committee, was the program for this week's Tuesday meeting.
Many points were brought up about the bike ride, including the history of the Bike Ride (33 years), number of miles ridden (100 miles from Pybus Public Market to the far end of Lake Wenatchee and back!), and what is a "SAG wagon" (Support And Gear).
Our average net funds from the bike ride is between $30k-$35k. This year's ride of June 1st netted about $24k. We'd like it to be around $40k.
There are 2 water stops (Cashmere and Beaver Hill) and 2 food pit stops (Leavenworth and the Fire Station at the far end of the Lake Wenatchee). The huge amount of work putting out route arrows and sign boards is usually accomplished by PJ Jones. We need to find someone to shadow PJ and act as his replacement should PJ not be able to do that job.
Many different agencies require permits for us to conduct our bike ride. Washington state, Chelan County, Cities and towns, State Parks, and WSDOT. Matt Eastman takes care of the permits.
Registration was headed up by Lisa Parks, but she has moved to Olympia. Ruth and others are filling in that position. Registration online will start Jan. 1, 2020. Joel McDonald heads that up, as well as the club website. We may need some help with Social Media to promote the bike ride.
John Schapman talked about the bike ride sponsors. Our current expenses are $15k-$20. We currently have between $10k-$15k in sponsors' donations for the 2020 bike ride. John encouraged club members to get sponsors. Alan passed around paper for club members to list potential members to be contacted.

Alan encouraged newer members to get more involved in the bike ride.

Pot Draw

Kathy Hamilton was the big $30 winner. She donated $15 to the club, and used the other $15 to buy Cougar Cheese at the meeting!
